FILTER GUY? what do you think of the motorcraft fl820s? do you have any flow and filtering specs on this filter? would it be of any benifit if i was to use donaldson, baldwin or fleetguard for my fords?all of the later have there bypass valve at the top of the filter but the motorcraft filter has it at the threads.any advice?

Motorcraft, IMHO. Great for the money; and has the preferred bypass valve.

Obviously the genuine Motocraft is a good filter. It is probably made by Purolator. Champion Labs would be the second choice.
There are options out there which are better. Basically, more money.
When it comes to by-pass valves there are two ways during manufacturing of assembling the filter with them.
One is to use a seperate component and put it in place between the end cap of the filter and the backplate assembly ( that metal part with the inlet and outlet holes ). < or if the by-pass is in the bottom of the element, to put it in place there>
The second is to incorporate the design as part of the endcap of the filter. Whether the valve is by the threaded holes or in the bottom of the element. ( the advantage of this design is; under pressure the valve won't try to seperate or deform from the endcap and allow unfiltered oil through. Or there is virtually no likelyhood of a mismanufacturing situation....wrong valve used or not properly seated during assembly.)
This is why some appear to be closer to the threads or slightly further inside the filter when you look down the center of the filter.
As far as the brands you mentioned, they are all quality companies. You can call their toll free numbers and ask for specs on their part number and then compare.
Rememeber, they will probably give you the "nominal" filter rating for the media. Which is 50% efficiency. You can ask for the "absolute", which should be 98.7% efficiency.
I would think all three of the companies use a buna rubber ( black) anti-drain and not silicon ( reddish) as probably the Motocraft does. That would be one difference.

Filter Guy, any special reason for preferring Champions over the usually well regarded here Donaldson, Baldwin or Fleetguard? Closest to them that I have ever dissembled after use was a Hastings. I found the Hastings to be similar to several Champion examples.
I am an OEM guy. I always liked what I used to find inside AC's, but that was before I knew to try to identify them by manufacturer. Now using ST 3950 and Purolator L15436 for lack of good places to buy my AC numbers.

I mentioned somewhere in here I don't like to go negative about various brands. I'll tell you what I know and answer questions as best I can.
As i worked for Champion for 18 years I know a bit about them. I was on the FIlter Manufacturers Council for two years. I had Donaldson, Baldwin, and Fram as my accounts for various lenghts of time.
Donaldson, Baldwin, and Fleetguard are all heavy duty trucking oriented. Not so much automotive. So if your interested in automotive OEM's, those three would be low on your list. But they build fine elements ( or have them built for them
). I could get picky and say that Clarcor own Baldwin and Hastings. Hastings does a little OEM stuff. Fleetgurad is owned by Cummins who owns Kuss filter. Kuss is a leader in fuel filters at the OEM level in cars.
All filter Companies source from each other in order to be able to offer a full product line.
There are differences in design. Each filter company will stand behind their product.
So if the speed limit is 70...does it matter your car will do 110 or 118 mph?
That's about what it gets down to when comparing specs from brand to brand.
There are differences in performance and the internals of the element. Depending on how you drive and what you expect out of your filter, may lead you to a particular choice that is best for you. But there may not be one best choice for everybody.
Someone who changes their oil like the OEM's say, and trades their car off every 2-3 years may not care what brand they use.
Someone who has a high performance engine may want something else.
Someone who wants the ultimate, may go that route.
Some techno geek..( no one in here
) may delight in every nuance and determine one filter type works best for him/her.
