So just acquired a 2006 Chevrolet Express 3500 4x4 long wheelbase van with the 6.0 V8 engine. As I live in Kyrgyzstan it's a pretty rare beast. I looked up the filter spec and it lists a non-bypass valve filter because, as I understand, GM put the bypass in the oil system and you don't need one in the filter. So my question is, will it hurt to run a filter with it's own pressure relief bypass? It's very hard to get a filter here that doesn't have one, but I can match thread and housing sizes. Thoughts?

There are some GM vehicles that do have the BP valve feature in the block; that is true. The 6.0L in your van is one such example.
It will not hurt at all to use a filter that has a BP in it as well. Consider it an unnecessary but additional safety feature. But why not use the correct filter? Is it any more difficult to come by than any other filter there?

It is basically impossible to find the original filter. I'm trying to get one in from Russia right now. The air filter that's in the van right now (I just bought it) is 7mm shorter than the factory and really doesn't fit right because the previous owner couldn't get the right one. Thanks for the info!

I just ordered some Wix filters (air and oil) from Russia, but they'll be a bit before they get here. Might need one oil change in the meantime.

The air filter poor fitment is a concern. You're more likely to get higher engine wear from a poor fitting air filter than an oil filter with mediocre efficiency.
The sooner you get the proper air filter, the better.
Assuming you get genuine Wix products for the application, you'll be fine. They are typically good quality products.

I checked Rock Auto for you. For the 2006, a Fram 3506 would fit. The 2006 up filter would be a 10060. It appears 2007 is when they removed the bypass assembly from the block. However, the 10060 has a metric thread and the 3506 is not metric.

You can make a large "o-ring" of the same circumference from 7mm or 8mm fuel or vacuum hose. I have had to do this in the past.
