I want to go fron a Fram XG 3387a to a Fram XG 3980 to get increased filter capacity. I know it fits. Is this a good upgrade?
thanks

I've done it several times on my 3.1 Buick Century without a problem. I'm not sure about the GM 3.8 but I know it's OK on the 3.1 and 3.4.

If this is the ole' Delco PF47 to PF52 upgrade jig... it gets my approval.

But as the original was an Xtended Guard - just as it's replacement is, don't expect any significant change in filtering quality - but the media will now have increased contaminant carrying capacity due to the larger can. Something that may be of use to you should you be pursuing a pretty hefty OCI (oil change interval).

For a newbie... you've already selected a heck of a filter.. just no bypass in it.

I've done that for my 89 Firebird 2.8L for 174,000 miles.
Was really funny to watch the dealership try to argue that it will damage my engine and that will void the warranty.
Well 1yr/12k isn't a warranty. And I did use the smaller filter for the first year, just because I was young and didn't know..
a mechanic at the gas station where I worked told me to do it bcause it added a little extra oil and provided a little extra filtering.
Great advice!

I do upgrade/extended size filters on both of my cars actually.

On the Saturn I go from a 1348 to a 1516 (Wix part numbers)

I believe its a 3614 if talking FRAM, and an FL400 Ford filter.

I also use the larger VQ30 filter on my VQ35. For some reason the VQ35 uses a dinky little filter. The VQ30 has a larger spec filter and it fits fine on a 3.5L.

yes it is and yes it works and works fine.

Not for me. I prefer not to mess with success. Just gimmee the standard filter size.

You're one of the vast legion of BITOG XTREME FULL CONTACT LUBRICATION members

No sump is too big or too small ..no filter too big or too small...no OCI too long or too short.

Accually it's more like 4.5(PF47) to 4.8-5(pf52)

with the 52 your just a tad over filled with 5 witch is perfect!

There would have had to be a lube failure that they could prove was due to the "wrong" filter being used, I think.

Hiya, Dan,
I used to use the both those on different cars but I don't remember if they both had an internal bypass?
Maybe I'm thinking of the PF53. I dunno. I'm tired.
Just wanted to say hi, really, since I been real busy.
