At 5000 miles on current oil change the engine started knocking at cold start up. Changed the oil filter 7 days ago and knocking has stopped.

out: Fram Tough Guard TG10060
in : Bosch Premium 3334 black can

Big deal...In the spread sheet there is 1 failure for the PurOne filter that cross references to my Bosch. It was a slight cut, not a tear.

Media tears, ADBV failure (or stiff ADBV).

Sounds like a faulty filter. I hardly call anything in Texas "cold"

x2 on cutting the filter open.

I cut the filter with a mini hack saw so debris inside of can might be metal shavings. I am new at cutting and photographing filters and I could not see anything wrong with internals. I hope you don't mind going to my album at tinypic.

All 3 checked out ok.

I don't see how enough oil can flow into the filter. The gaps around the base plate end end cap look too small. I guess that's ok. I think it worked for 5000 miles.

That's right! It's not cold. The lowest forecast low was 29f but it only got down to 33f.

Optical illusion ... area of all those holes will be plenty enough to flow whatever hits the filter.

After 5K, I would have done a complete oil change. Big deal, an extra few quarts. I can't figure.
