Ive noticed that most automotive filters are the same price regardless of size. My oil filter for my truck is twice the size of the one for my car but yet they cost the same amount. Im wondering why that is. Does it cost the filter companies the same for the materials regardless of size. I wouldn't think so but who knows.

I see that the really gigantic filters are quite a bit more. I think for a certain range of filters the manufacturers just come up with an average cost for that range of sizes. In reality, it does cost a little more to make a larger filter just due to material costs, and it could also cost more due to manufacturing processes.

That tiny little WIX filter for small outdoor equipment (57035??) is priced like a diesel ($12-15).

Hello, "{The} tiny little WIX filter for small outdoor equipment..." in my experience was a 51056 for many Kohler and other small engines.
I got a Purolater equivalent, L35310, on a jug oil special for no additional fee.
Maybe the AdvanceAuto was being generous with me? It had to be over the common allowance.
Maybe the "special" little filters are priced opportunistically? Price gouging, anyone?
Maybe they have limited runs of production?

All you can do is get the cross reference numbers and shop as you would for anything else.
The 51056 has, in addition to the Puro #, Hastings, Fram and NAPA crosses.
There's also a Baldwin # but mystery filters which seem not to exist don't count. Kira

Oil filters within a given brand and tier have traditionally been priced the same without regard to size.
This was the case forty years ago and remains true today.
The only good reason that I can think of is that no retailer back then wanted a couple of dozen different prices for the cashiers to have to pay attention to.
That wouldn't matter today, but the practice remains.

I suspect that the materials for the filter, regardless of size (passenger cars), is less than 50 cents. The remainder is volume for a particular model, mark up by factory, distributor and dealer.

That might be a case of a low volume item, which might be priced much higher due to the fact the manufacturer can't spread the cost out over super large numbers of a certain filter model being made.

Lol. Good point.

On a side note, the WIX 51358 is another one of those $12 filters.. and it even has a nitrile ADBV.

Size 85 waist pants (or XXXXL seat shirts) usually cost more though.

The minor tooling changes and slightly more raw materials would maybe make a few cents difference in cost. It would probably make it more tempting for people to use the wrong filter if the price was different for each filter causing more possible warranty claims.

I get it closer to $10, but my much larger 51515 is $4.99. Go figure.
