Filter Relocation on GM with in-engine ADBV - Draining ALL the oil

I'm sick of changing my full flow filter on my Chev K1500. Because of its location and the 4x4 components, I get a skinnier filter, and the used oil from the filter gets all over my front U joint and other components and generally makes a mess.

I want to relocate the filter with a spin on adapter and a relocation kit up to the front of the engine compartment. This way I get a clean filter change and a bigger filter. Plus with my topsider oil extractor, I won't even need to get underneath the truck.

My concern on the Chevy is this - The full flow filter doesn't have an ADBV...it's somewhere in the engine block. This means that the hoses that bring the oil up into the engine bay from the block will hold the used oil left in the hoses, and not let it drain down into the block while doing an oil change. Am I understanding this correctly?

If so, does anyone know a way around this problem?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

GMs have the BYPASS in the engine block not the ADBV. For an adapter you may want to try a filter from a 4x4 Blazer, they have the same size filter relocated to under the hood or behind the bumper(depending on year).

Just curious what filter you are using? The stock filter should be a PF52 equivalent and I'm not aware of a skinnier one.

Thanks for the reply T-Keith. I guess I was mixed up....you are absolutely right! I should do a little more research before I post.

The '98 chev full size 4x4 with a 350 uses the skinny 1036 to clear the various 4x4 components. These are the:

- Napa Gold/Wix 1036
- Fram PH3980

The '98 chev full size truck - 2wd with a 350 uses a fatter filter, don't know the number, but it looks alot like the big ford/fram PH8A as I recall.

I used to have the same truck. I took a piece of aluminum flashing and formed it over the u-joint and drive shaft. The oil that drained from the filter flowed over it and into the drain pan. After it drained, I wiped off the flashing and removed it. No mess.
It seemed to me that the oil that was in the oil cooler lines and cooler drained out when I removed the filter.
The filter I used for my truck was the AC PF52.

In many years, the PF35/PF1218 was spec'd for 4wd applications. On some years, the PF52 is used and in other situations the PF454 (shorter than a PF25, but replaced it) is used. The PF1218 and PF454 were the ADBV replacements for the PF35 and PF25, respectively.

Not a really "clean" way to do that oil change. Brake cleaner spray? The "drain plate" idea is a good one, just as it would be for many modern front wheel drive vehicles.

Some S-10 applications have a factory remote oil filter arrangement. Filter is on the fender skirt. I think they came on many 4wd 4.3L V-6 models, so the basic engine architecture might be there to use for your K1500, if the lines can be modified to fit. Check the salvage yards . . .
