Hi,

I'm running a 2000 Mercury Cougar 2.5L V6 on an 8,000 - 10,000 KM OCI on Mobil 1 5w30.

Wanted to know what oil filter would be good for this king of OCI.

Car currently has a FRAM Tough Guard filter on it, I think. I know thats not so good, but what ever. I need to change the oil now, and need something that will hold for an extended OCI such as this.

Keep in mind, I do not have the same choices up here in Canada, as you guys do in the USA. So, here are my local choices:

FRAM Tough Guard: $7.50
FRAM Extended Guard: $13.00
K&N: $13.00
Denso: $14.50
NAPA Gold: $8.40

So, what would you (experts) suggest. Will any of these be able to go 10,000 KM OCI? Which is best?

OK: 10,000 km~ 6,200 mi. Are Canadian NAPA Golds made by Wix? If so, that should work just fine for your purposes. For a few more $$, the K&N would be an excellent choice.

Those would be my choices.

From the list you give, to me it is an easy choice to use the NAPA Gold... a known good filter at a price only slightly higher than the cheap Fram.

I know you guys get shafted on the filter choices up there, but I'm surprised you can't buy a Motorcraft someplace. If you can, that might be a good choice, as well.

Nothing wrong with the toughguard.

With a good synthetic oil, and an OCI
Since time is also a factor, how long does it take you to drive 10k km?

Benny, if I go by your list exclusively, then NAPA Gold would be my first choice, followed by the FRAM Tough Guard.

If you can get Motorcraft filters (your dealer should have them?) then that would be #1, followed by the above.

hmmm, good idea. i'll call the local Ford dealer tomorrow and see if they have the motorcraft for this car. if not, i'll get the NAPA Gold.

thanks for the input, guys!

so I called the dealer. they had the Motorcraft filter. wanted $12.50 for it, and they also said they had no clue who makes it. said there's no gaurantee its the same as the ones in the USA, in fact, they said it probably isn't.

so I bought NAPA Gold. they told me its 100% the same as the USA ones. in fact, he told me it comes from the states, and is made by WIX.

so, I guess I got the best one. plus. it was the cheapest. well... list price is $12.99 but I've got a shop account there, so I got it cheap.

so, what do you guys say... this filter is good for 8,000 - 10,000 KM OCI, right?

A vehicle like this, I'd run a walmart supertech filter and a good quality conventional oil.

I'm not sure what the canadian flavor of supertech is, but surely you have one.

Candians have a hard time with filters for some reason. All of them are expensive ..even if you account for the exchange rate.

ya, i REALLY have no clue why we get the shaft when it comes to oil filter prices. our prices make NO sense. also, oil is much much cheaper in the USA, as well as tires.

in fact, almost everything automotive-related is cheaper in the states. but especially oil, filters, and tires.

JustinH: nope. no supertech filters in walmart in canada. we do have supertech oil. but not filters. wlamart only carries FRAM (Extra Guard, Tough Guard, Extended Guard, Double Guard), along with their cheapo counterpart "Defense".

so i think the NAPA Gold is my best option, as far as quality AND price goes.
