Filter for 02 F150

I inherited this truck from my dad. Today was the first time I changed the oil. The filter that came off of it was a Valvoline VO-105. The recommended filter from NAPA is a 21372. The NAPA filter is too big and it won't even reach the threads. The outside diameter is too large. We crossed referenced a few different filters and I'm using a NAPA 27502. The Valvoline filter and the 27502 both have an OD of 2.94 inches. The 21372 has an OD 3.66. What is the correct filter?

They most likely used the 105 filter cause the truck was brought to a quick lube. They often use smaller and cheaper filters. The 1372 filter is correct.

But the 1372 doesn't fit.

4.6L Ford engines generally spec the Motorcraft FL820S, the Wix/NG equivalent is the 5/1372. No idea the NG doesn't fit. Wix look up for this year model shows 51372 also.

As far as I know there was only 1 filter for those engines. fl820 or equivalent.metric thread iirc. You gotta turn it just right and it will go up in there and screw on.

Will the 7502 work for the time being? I can get another 1372 and try again.

I just happened to have a 2001 NAPA filter book on my computer desk. The book shows the 1372 for your engine, at least for the year 2001.
I happened to change the filter on my '97 F250 with the 5.4 today and put on a Motorcraft FL820.

My 02 5.4 is due for a change. Currently have an FL820s on it. It was a bear to get it in there. You definitely have to angle it in. I plan on cutting it open to see if there was any tears.

Plan on going with a Gram TG2 next.

The NG 7502 is the Motorcraft FL500S equivalent. Using Wix specs for the 57502 (same filter as NG 7502) gasket dimensions (OD/ID) say it will fit and work. It's narrower and a little longer than 1372 but otherwise the same including bypass. Based on that, I'd say fine to use it in place of the 1372.
