So you blame a generation?

Doesn’t make sense - it makes more sense to blame the AHA and AMA.

He's not really wrong though, I remember many times in the 90s and early 00s how healthy foods was generally down talked by the "we drank out of garden hose" people. US society turned into a fast-paced machine with more and more work hours and less time for home-cooked meals. Overweight and obesity coincides with the rise of commercialized farms, frozen dinners like Hungry Man, fast food, and technological advances that made shelf-stable sugary products like Little Debbie snacks very obtainable in price and availability compared to fresh meats and produce, and in many cases cheaper than real food. Cheap, high-cal, fast to eat and prep meals started becoming the norm, especially among the blue collar with demanding physical jobs.

Yup........ Deadly
I guess Hollywood killed just as many because it was cool to smoke..

All part of America's society, smoking areas in malls, in restaurants, airplanes....etc. Gotta make sure a pregnant lady has her cigarettes too in order to 'stay fit' during pregnacy.

At least we're smarter about what goes in our foods now, more and more.....as I go out to get panda express and have a smoke.

The thing I cannot figure out is most of Asia essentially lives on rice, yet for the most part there historically very healthy. I haven't found anything to explain this. White rice has plenty of carbs and starch which turns to glucose, so its functionally no better than grain as best I can tell.

Probably in our genes lol, same reason why most Asians are lactose intolerant. Generally also more active, smaller portions of food, and less additives in real traditional dishes. Most dishes consisted of a minimalist chicken/pork style soup with leafy greens and rice anyways. Nowadays, lots and lots of salt are in our dishes.

Let's blame smart phones and video games for the obesity- diabetes epidemic.

Remember if you want your RDA of Arsenic make sure you only eat that healthy brown rice... .most of it is stripped away from the unhealthy white rice.....

Overweight and sedentary lifestyle. Choose whatever reason for those you wish.

Germany has very low diabetes. They drink like fish, put gravy on everything and eat processed meat for breakfast and lunch. But they walk or ride there bike everywhere, and almost no one is fat.

1. Portion control
2. Dessert type (and portion control)
3. Fat amount (Panda Express is not the same type of Asian food they eat there, some people call it American food, and even if they eat the same type of food they don't eat as much, so yeah, portion control).
4. American are desensitized to the sweetness and grease level in food vs in other foreign food elsewhere. I probably can only drink 1/4 to 1/2 the amount of sugar in beverage in the US. So yeah you can say it is also portion control.
5. They are starting to have the same problem as we do in the younger generation.

Have you seen the portion size of Japanese fast food? Their fries is like 1/4 of our size and burger 1/2.

I know what you mean, I'm not saying it is wrong. Human has a tendency to desire the wrong thing once we find a way to commoditize it.

We were wired to like calories 200 years ago because it keep us alive. That makes us pay more for comfort food, that makes us try to make comfort food affordable, that turn it toxic. We probably need 200 years of early mortality to weed out some genetic traits before humanity evolved into desire healthy food. Unfortunately we didn't evolve that way regarding to addictive banned substance like tobacco and narcotics, so I'm not holding my breath.

Most Asian don't eat brown rice. It is not the rice that makes you fat or thin.

BTW the people who live close to the longest in the world, those Japanese and Hong Konger? They don't eat brown rice usually either.

That was to @SC Maintenance and not about obesity but another so called healthy alternative to white rice.

I am not talking fast food here. And yes, the Japanese invented bento boxes to make it look like there was more food because they were starving most of the time. But in most asian countries its a ton of rice, eggs, lots of vegetables and a small amount of meat and more rice. Or noodles. But Mostly rice. So your saying if I stuck to 5 cups of rice and a carrot a day, I would be skinny?

I will also say I have been to Germany for work many times and have literally never been hungry there. They eat all the time - and are also skinny?

Europeans often have far more vacation than Americans and stress kills...... too many variables

Most drunks live a long healthy life as long as they beer it mostly.....
Rock singers get away with it all

My usage of the slang term, "boomer slop" is not tantamount to my blaming a generation for anything. It is commonly used to refer to food products that are commonly acquired and consumed due to preference, be it because of the nature of the products, cost, marketing, combination thereof, etc.

I'll make it easy for you: Highly processed, glyphosate (1975) saturated, diabetes inducing foods products that originally became popular during the adult years of the boomer generation and the prevalence of said foods have become omnipresent... that is what I am referring to generally when I use the term "boomer slop"

Kinda sorta

Most meals are vegetables and some meat with rice a bit of a filler

Sumo wrestlers fatten up on rice

But genetics eating less calories and being a lot more active come into play as well

Whole milk was erroneously blamed for diabetes when it was far more healthier than the reduced fat versions and has a high C15 content which is a new discovery and is claimed to help reverse fatty liver disease.... I have been taking it a few months myself... I'm not a milk drinker however

Indeed, it is interesting to know that waaaay back then being chunkier was a status symbol because it meant you had money. Quite the opposite now.

I will also say I have been to Germany for work many times and have literally never been hungry there. They eat all the time - and are also skinny?

Absolutely that too. We've become a nation built on cars. It's nice that bike and walking paths and dedicated lanes are now becoming more prevalent but unfortunately only really built where the community is much more outdoorsy like some Colorado towns, or places where public transportation is good like in cities.

About genetics.

I know a lot of people will not be aware of this but every generation of today's Asians seem to be significantly taller than their parents. I remember seeing photos of WW2 era Japanese male being only around 5', and their current generation is 5'5"+, with not much more than better nutritions.

The portion size difference is real in Japan at least. I was hungry when I travel there all the time even when eating a restaurant meal not fast food.

It has been proven that it is the calorie deficit and surplus that determine your BMI and weight. You can eat ramen and drink Snapples every day and lose weight (I did that when I was in my late 20s to save money on company free food instead of lunch, I lost weight in the end but got bad teeth). Sumo Wrestlers eat like 10k calories a day and train like crazy, normal American aren't like that but our portion is definitely much more than they do in Asia.

There is no 20oz soda in Asia, I think 12oz is the max in fast food. Costco slices of pizza is like around 50% larger than those in Europe and probably elsewhere in Asia too.

They do walk more due to public transit's last leg to and from station, but as anyone who exercise knows, that's nothing more than 100 calories a day max unless you walk like 30 mins (then it may be 300 calories), but the portion size, sugar drink size, etc contribute easily an extra 700-1000 calories per day.

As a reference, when my parents visited here as a tourist 30 years ago and ordered at a restaurant, the portion were over estimated by 50% to 100% more than they were used to. It is great the food was cheap but still, huge portion is not always good for your health.

I wonder how many pounds of refined sugar the average American ate in 1925 compared to 2025? It's in everything now.

My wife cut out sugar and the pounds just fell off her. I'm convinced and will be doing the same.
