Hello fellow BITOG'ers
Found an importer in my country (Portugal) that sells Lucas products.
So far, its the only brand i can find in my country that has a 20 grade oil available, quite hard to find over here..

I was wondering if someone here ever used it and could give some feedback?
I never heard of it here and at least would like to have some info on its qualities/properties before i buy it..

Thanks everyone :)

Well, LUCAS is popular over here in the states and they have their following of supporters. There are others that find their products to be only marginal at best and way overpriced. Lucas is known for making addatives and only recently have launghed their motor oils. Others will chime in with information that can help you make a better decision.

It has a kind of cult following here too, and you easily obtain any of their products from the local Can Tire. I think they're over priced and I'm very skeptical of them (I use additives, but no Lucas products). Their synthetic oil is insanely expensive here. And beyond the name (for those of whom that carries any weight for), I see nothing special about it to buy it at even half the price Can Tire sells it for.

I've bought PP for less than half the price. If I had to pick between them at the same price, I'd still pick PP (or Syntec, or Synpower, or even Motomaster Formula 1 syn).

Unfortunately the OPs options are much more limited. I don't think you'll find many here who have much experience with Lucas oil, simply because there are too many better products available to us in North America for a lot less.

Sorry that's not very helpful for you.

Ok.. thank you guys for the heads up..
Still waiting on the price info from the importer, so it will all depend of how much they ask for it..

Closest to a 20 grade i find here is MOTUL's Specific 0w30, 9,7 cSt @100 and TBN of 10.. but it is an ester based group V oil and 5L cost 90€..

Thank´s everyone.

I wouldnt do it. How expensive would it be to order a few cases of, lets say, Motorcraft, and have it delevered.? I say MC, cuz its good but the lower price would help offset the cost of shipping..

I wouldn't do it either. That's too much. Cheaper just to keep pouring the cheapest oil you can get your hands on into it (buy it in bulk ;))

I use only the Lucas fuel additive, not any of their oil products. Portugal's climate should be similar to Florida's.Is using 5W-20 a must for you? Visco 7000 has a 0W-30 variety, and it is full synthetic.Esso must have a 5w-20 oil.

Their products are way over priced. It ain't cheap keeping your name on a stadium!

Well, if they are already overpriced in the US, and considering that oil in my country is already overpriced, i'll probably stick to the 5w30 i'm using for now..

It´s not a MUST have issue for me, but i would like to try some..

I read a Shell study that one of my fellow BITOG'ers shared with me, claiming a thinner 20 grade oil gave less oil consumption thru the rings, and wanted to try it myself..

Already replaced my Shell Helix Ultra 5w40 with Shell Helix HX7 5w30 and altough still too early, after 400 miles results look interesting..

If i manage to confirm it with this 5w30, i´ll be eager to try a 20 grade oil.. perhaps i'll find one ´til then, at not to high a price..

20 grade Esso or any other, are not available in my area, and i'm still waiting on the price info from the company that represents LUCAS over here.. my guess is they will try to sell it as a rare exotic american product with a "liquid gold" like price tag..

Moving from a 11,7cSt @100 oil to a 8cSt @100 oil should get even more clear results in figuring if it works or not..

Just experimenting as any BITOGER :)

Ok, price is here.. 10€ per quart for Lucas synthetic 5w20.
Considering that i paid about the same for Shell HX7 synthetic blend 5w30, that does not sound terrible..

Castrol Edge 5w30 costs 17€ per quart here, and MOTUL spcific 0w30 ester-based group V oil, 18€ per quart..

Yes, oil here is WAY overpriced..

I expect the Lucas 5w20 have at least the same quality as the Shell 5w30 blend, i hope.

Opinions?

Nobody likes Lucas here on this forum. Mostly Rednecks use it.

It's a lot of hype with little substance nor a major oil company to back it up. Most posters here seem to wrongly assume the reader is aware of this, so I will be more obvious about it.

LUCAS should not be compared to a technically competent private company like AMSoil. At most Lucas is a rebottler of the cheapest product that they can find, to later sell to the public at a premium price.

Then LUCAS purchases a lot of "goodwill" in the appropriate auto sports sectors. You won't see LUCAS sponsor ALMS or Grand-Am, but you will see them at truck pulls and similar mud-bog events, where they find a receptive audience.

Yes, i got the impression there are far better choices in the US.

The only reason i was considering it is because here it is the only 5w20 available, and sold at almost half the price of any 5w30 here, Ultra or Edge..

Also, if Lucas say their 5w20 is a synthetic, is it really a group III oil, or worst?

Bottom line is, what would be a safe OCI to use it?

Sounds like they are "dumping" it.
