Depends on need. For Patrol rifle in my area (urban) hard to beat a red dot. We use Aimpont Patrol Rifle Optic. Pretty basic and once co-witnessed its a breeze. For my personal AR's I love the ACOG format mounted in a LaRue on my Noveske (5.56) but use a Zeiss with a 50mm bell in a LaRue mount on my 6.8 AR's. Easy to move em around if I need too. I had and sold a Swaro 1x6 just because it didn't fit my needs as well as an ACOG and a larger traditional scope. Great glass though.

The VX R Patrol has a Fire Dot that comes on with movement. V-e-r-y long battery life. So you have scope and red-dot. The 1.25 ~ 4 30mm is close enough on the low end to use as a Red Dot and not worry about magnification issues. At 4x it's a good little scope smile

Think of optics & guns like pairing speakers to a home theater. You can buy a $10,000 audio system but if you pair it up with a $200 set of speakers...... Well you get my drift. You get what you pay for.

I do like Leupold, Zeiss, Trijicon. Leupold has been very Very VERY nice to me when it comes to warranty issues even when I'm at fault.

I guess my most memorable was shooting an M16 at Knob Creek with a PVS-4 Gen II starlight, it's a big scope but did not handle that way, the AR pistol grip gave plenty of leverage to keep the scope level! Around 1995, there was a flood or Russian stuff here and got to use the Russian copy of the PVS 4, heavier, bigger, weird battery and a chevron reticle! After, that using an Elcan scope with the tritium reticle was nice too.

Leupold good quality no doubt. They don’t discount LE so I’ve always went to Zeiss and Swarovski. I have Leupy shotgun scopes on a 12 n 20 that are solid. Street application of scope in my job (small city in 4.5 sq miles) and it isn’t very useful. Different if it were user owned and not armory issue.

I have a Leupold firedot VXR patrol 1-4x scope on my .308 AR. There is no way at all would I put it as my primary optic on a home defense gun. There is absolutely no need whatsoever for magnification in a home defense gun. When on patrol, I had no use for one either. Red dot aimpoint all the way. When you can shoot someone in the head easily, at 250 yards with a 1x aimpoint, the whole idea of magnification just doesn't make sense to me.

I thought that they did discount to LE. Have you contacted them? Never could budget in a Leupold scope, but have their price list, and it was about 30% off MSRP. Their guide program is even better - about 50% off. https://www.leupold.com/leupold-core/vip-programs

Kahles K16i, but now that I've moved, Comp M5. I just don't have the distance to make use of magnification enough to make up for the weight and acceptance of tube effect.

Agreed. Amazingly water-clear glass, easy to use and can be used as a red-dot with both eyes open. By far, my favorite AR scope. Lightweight, 100% trouble free, wonderful in low light conditions and tough beyond belief.
