My Father's Isuzu Rodeo knocks on acceleration. I'm clueless to the engine additives subject matter.

I assume knocking is caused by carbon buildup from the dirty gas...which could cause decrease in mpg.

What are the suggested methods to combat engine knock?

have tune up done and have timing checked....pull codes

sounds likes carbon buildup in combustion chambers...start with a full can of Berryman's B12 in thru the throttle body or a vacuum line for quick cleaning....
follow up with an application of Frank's ARX for continued long term complete engine cleaning internally

Are we talking about pinging (spark knock) or oil knock.

If it is knocking on acceleration, you are not getting proper oil flow.

Are you using a Fram oil filter?

What year rodeo? What engine? ~2000 3.2L's have a software upgrade to help reduce ping. Word has it tho- that it zaps some power and decreases fuel economy a bit. If it is a 2000+ 3.2, they are temperamental beasts with ion sensing ignition and electronic throttle control. Not a lot you can do aside from maybe a decarbing and turn up the radio.

Right now, I would venture the latter based on your description. The oil filter is any they put on @ for him when he gets it serviced.

2002 3.2V6 is the engine spec.
I've read about what you described in the pre '01 engines.

That's my first inclination is to do Frank's ARX.

Thanks for the warning-

TripleM, I've had several isuzu 3.2/3.5's in the family. I also owned a 2002 isuzu rodeo 3.2L LS 4x4. If this knock was an oil related concern (connecting rod knock, etc..) the engine would have died a quick death long ago. The #1 con rod bearing is what goes first on these engines from oil starvation. Once an audible bottom end knock is heard, she's done. There are no hydraulic valve lash adjusters on these engines, so it's not 'lifter tick' you are hearing, although this direct acting, shim and bucket adjustable valvetrain is inherently tappy sounding (sewing machine rythem). A loud rap at idle only is typically a worn timing belt tensioner (unlikely on a 2002). Some ping under hard acceleration is typical on these engines. Certain fuels, ambient conditions and driving habits make it worse. I guess I was lucky as I never had a ping with my 2002. You could try a decarbing on it, but I doubt it will yeild much. An oil system cleaner certainly is not a bad thing, but I doubt that will do anything at all for this issue. In the event you have not discovered this, these engines can consume oil at an alarming rate. Oil level checks at every fuel up are a must for long-haul trips.
