Obviously, you have it completely backwards. Lowering/eliminating the government dole should be the objective. That will provide the most incentive.

Since I won't live long enough to recover all that was confiscated from me, I consider it "my" money. That being said, I could never bring myself to accepting a government check for my own use.

Well, 50 + hour work weeks were very common and likely still are. I don't see how you could ever hope to get ahead on 40 hours per week.

Here's how you deal with working long hours: learn to sleep less.

Almost all of Arkansas' high pay 40 hour / week factory jobs are now in Mexico. Mucho gusto, Billary.

I far as I can tell. I tend to eat there as a last resort. I notice that their other "deals" are the same as everywhere. My suspicion is that the fast-food joints can weather this better than a stand-alone local restaurant. For one thing, their clientele tends to be pretty poor and working class compared to a regular restaurant. That mitigates things for them some I think. For another, they have other efficiencies to cover over the increased cost. They have had to be a little more careful about blatantly hiring illegal alien labor the past few years compared to the local place. the local guy is just stuck and gets to raise prices a dollar a plate.

I have one question (and it is an honest question):

Is every thing else at the Taco Bell the same price as one in an area that does not have a minimum wage above 10.00 and does that go for other fast food joints as well?

Yeah and 50 hour weeks are yet another reason for crumbling society, and less sleep is a reason for the obesity and poor health.

Look, I work WELL over 40 ( more like 55-60/week), and are getting my phd at the same time in a challenging field. But having a newborn, it is a VERY tough thing to just accept those hours and be done with it.

Ditto for the criminal 4-12 weeks thu give women after childbirth. Causes issues with breast feeding, bonding, sleep, etc. My wife took off the year because in our view it was criminal to pop out a baby and dump it to a third party a few weeks later in the interest of a career, or because of someone else's profit margin. Poor long term think g and exactly why there are issues in this country.

For me, I can't get enough of our baby. Of course, babies sleep a lot, so it's easy to be both productive and supporting development. But as our baby grows, something has to sacrifice. To do anything else (give up health or time with kids) is horrid. Don't breed em if you can't feed or spend time with em.

I don't disagree that you have to bust your hump, be the absolute best in an area, and get paid a premium with too much work for the number of hours in a day. That was my goal and is my situation and it is a good thing. Everyone should strive rather than being complacent, and nobody should accept a minimum wage job as a career unless they don't have the aptitude to do more. But IMO given that I'm living it now, the suggestion to just work more isn't a good one given the crumbling family structure, destruction of morals and society, etc that is going on.

This is exaclty correct. My wife went to work 4 weeks after giving birth.I work and go to school and could not afford for her to not work. Everyone acts like all thats important is money and money is a big part of our problem. Greed is an evil thing. Working hard is a great thing. But working hard to not even make a basic living is ridiculous. People should not get paid below the poverty line. Whats the point in working if you cant even make ends meat? Working so you cant have enough to survive just makes absolute zero sens.

Yeah...maybe multiple problems. First one is you need to find a better paying job or a second job. Your employer is not responsible for your personal overhead. If you cannot find a better paying job it's probably because you are not qualified for one or you just aren't looking hard enough. There are several pages of "help wanted" ads in the local daily paper where I live and I can't believe it's not the same all over the country. I was making 50K per year when I was 15 years old!! Made more than my mom and dad combined. I worked extremely hard for my money. I never asked for a handout and I always looked for other ways to make more money and to supplement my income on top of my regular job. I have zero tolerance for these mouth breather idiots that demand their hourly wage be effectively doubled. If you double your productivity or double your sales, then sure, maybe a raise is warranted, but $15 per hour for a burger flipper is outrageous. And so is welfare and unemployment paying people to effectively sit at home on their bum. The govt should give them utility coupons to keep their water and electric on (6 months tops) and food coupons worth $100/month tops.

I am outraged that they pay these dolts to sit at home, buy cigarettes and beer and obama phones courtesy of my tax dollars. I don't see why the road and bridge department can't require them to work 30 hours per week picking up trash on the highway until they can find a job.

I never understood why we can't put able bodied people to work cleaning things.

I feel very sorry for those who have a legitimate need to be on welfare or PA. I would hate to be in a situation where I am not able to provide for myself - due to an economic disadvantage, mental or physical disability.

Living in NY, we give welfare and PA to the COMPLETE WRONG PEOPLE. There are people with mental disabilities and physical disabilities that cannot get any PA and are, literally, starving. Meanwhile, there are leeches that get on it because they just don't want to work.

Why can't we put the able bodied / minded people to work? There is a lot of graffiti. The parks here rarely get cleaned. The highways are full of trash.

I will NOT say its as easy as "just go out and get a job". It is Central NY. There are ZERO jobs. But it would give them at least a sense of accomplishment; job well done type of deal.

I wasn't referring to ramman. I was referring to lifetime welfare recipients and those that would rather sit for years on unemployment then go work a job, even a menial job if that is all they can find.

This is one of, if not my biggest beef. That we pay people to sit on their [censored], so they sell drugs, make grow-ops in their provided housing.....etc. There is no incentive for them to go out and get a job because the situation we put them in is comfortable enough. Certainly enough for somebody who doesn't have to work to keep it.
 
These jobs are designed for 3 to 6 hour shifts for people to supplement their income or pay their studies, add a little cash here and there.

As someone said, not meant for lifetime employment as a cashier or "burger-flipper"

And when I worked in McDonald's in Baltimore, I had an assistant manager quit because, in her own words, "I got enough on welfare to live ok, spend my nights in night clubs and have a good time. Here I have to get up in the morning and work so much that I can't go out and party at night"

So reduce welfare and benefits to a level where people will work, and let the industries settle who gets paid how much. (Although I'll agree that some big time executives and sports players make way more than their fair share.)

Be outraged. 39 states now pay out more than you could earn working at minimum wage. Where is the incentive to work?

No sane individual wants the truly needy to starve, but many of the programs are estimated to be up to 40% fraudulent! Forty percent is simply outrageous. Those of us getting up early and doing without until we can afford it deserve better than this situation that rewards sloth.

So while I work and use my skills to feed my family, there's a mooching sack of manure sitting at home having a smoke with a beer and tending to his grow-op while his undisciplined offspring terrorize the kids of those who actually have respect for themselves and try and raise their kids with that same philosophy. The mother of his kids is out shopping with my money at Walmart, perhaps buying a new TV or iPhone, so that she can sit on her posterior and play Angry Birds or Farmville when she gets back home to her townhouse that I'm also paying for.

Those in higher income brackets like my father pay for several of these families......... It absolutely disgusts me.

And before anybody jumps on me for taking a broad-brush approach and wants to tell me that they aren't all like that, I know. But there are SO MANY OF THEM that ARE like that, that the fact that there are some that aren't, well, it doesn't matter. The system is SO corrupt and SO exploited, that to point out that there are some that actually leverage it in a legitimate manner is like spray painting rainbows on dog feces and calling it Chocolate cake.

So what's the solution?
Its been established that staying home and collecting welfare pays more than minimum wage in many places. Plus then they have free time to do something that pays very well?
It seems they are following market theory perfectly!
Raising the minimum wage and legalizing pot seems to be an easy solution to try atleast.
Removing all social assistance produces something like India, or maybe South Africa. Not places I want to visit, let alone live.
Also I don't think social assistance is really enough to live comfortably on in Ontario atleast. I suspect most people on it, aren't really having a great time, and would rather have a job and do something useful.
But there aren't enough legal jobs anymore, so welfare and minor crime isn't a bad option for someone with no chance of getting hired for anything.
