Faking status for military discounts

My wife has a friend group which has regular lunch and dinner events. One of the group, an older lady in her late-60s, routinely makes a fuss about her "military discount." Since Corpus Christi is a military town, it's pretty common to receive discounts. When offered, my wife will certainly pull out her ID (I'm retired) and graciously accept the discount. The woman in question, however, only has a PDF copy of her husband's DD214 on her phone and simply flashes that at the restaurants.

My wife told me the wait staff is always a bit skeptical, but always caves in and gives her the discount. On one occasion I asked about her husband's service (4 years honorable in the 1970s) and told her how her husband can get a valid Veteran ID Card (VIC) through the VA. I also told her since he's neither retired nor disabled that the vet's benefits generally will not apply to a spouse. She replied, "Why would we do that? My way always works just fine. It works at a lot of stores, too!"

I ended the conversation at that point (no need to start an argument), but I have to admit this kind of chaps my a$$. Those of us who have spent 20+ years in the service have earned specific benefits...as have all vets who have honorably served. The difference with regard to spouses, however, is under most circumstances only spouses of retirees and those with 100% VA disability get any kind benefits extended to them. Her use of the DD214 can therefore be construed as a mild form of fraud.

Several of my friends (many retirees also) aren't bothered. I am bothered. Right is right, wrong is wrong, and this woman is simply cheating the system. And FWIW, this lady is a very loud Type-A while her husband is a rather meek little man who remains pretty quiet. If I didn't know better I'd swear she was a former 11B.

For sure there's a lot of gaming the system. I guess the main issue is my wife is very torn about saying something to this woman. I suggested she kindly point out the problem and leave it at that.

She 100% has yelled at the gate guards "DO YOU KNOW WHO MY HUSBAND IS?!?!?!" Insufferable!

As someone who started my career as an "installation entry controller," this is 1000% true! What's really funny is the husbands - even general officers - were typically very cool while the spouses were pureblood Karens.

DO YOU REALIZE WHAT HE DOES ON A DAILY BASIS?!?! HE DEFENDS YOUR FREEDOM!!!! YOU OWE HIM!!!/1/1

Reminds me of a discussion we had with the 25th ID CG MG Mixon one day in Iraq whilst escorting him and his entourage around. He goes, 1-star Generals are generally a-holes because they finally got promoted from COL and want to show everyone they made it to the cool kids club. 2-star Generals are pretty laid back because they're on their 2nd star so they've mellowed out a little bit, they understand where they rate in the grand scheme of things and have accepted their fate in the universe that they're probably not getting a 3rd star. 3-star Generals are like 1-stars, gigantic prima donnas and jerks with a huge chip on their shoulder because they figured out they're not getting a 4th star. 4-star Generals are at the top so they have nothing left to prove and are just chillin.

After having escorted probably 50+ Generals in Iraq, he was 99.8% correct in his assessment, can confirm. He was one of the nicest and coolest Generals we escorted there.

There was a drunk DA in Texas who did the “know who I am” with the LEO - sure do - it’s on your license 😷
Hands behind your back please 🔒

My father got turned around cause he had childhood asthma he would have been towards the tail end nam. He somehow got himself in the guard did 6 years some talk smack that he's an abuser and shouldn't be able to qualify for discounts. he had an honorable discharge of service he could have done nothing when he was turned down for a medical. Good for dad I say he's entitled to military discounts and breakfast/lunches.

I understand the sentiments of stolen valor and so on. But I assume that she and her husband are likely one financial entity? So the wife getting the discount is effectively the same as the husband getting the discount? Also, did she enable his service by taking care of the family while he was serving?

I do see a distinction if she came along long after his service ended, and is financially independent from him.
