Military jargon is loaded with portmanteaus and acronyms like that. Remember 'civdiv', figmo, 'short timer' or 'head shed'? How about a 72 or 96? Military argot is sometimes so strange that Reader's Digest had a regular feature of the magazine dedicated to military humor.
