Failured to Signal a Lane Change, Died Days Later

I causally watched the short clip on the TV news.

I'm dubious about her death being a suicide, but little seems to be known about the facts surrounding that. Time will tell.

The officer had a written warning that he was going to give her. I think she assumed it was a ticket and had an attitude about that and being pulled over.

Very few is not the same as "nothing," as was in this story. Personally, I find the new story you linked fishy. A police captain is going to talk about a deputy's personnel file to a newspaper? Also, what is the retention period for complaints in that department or in that jurisdiction? I guarantee you that up here, if someone had a complaint from twenty years ago, that would have been removed from their personnel file quite some time ago due to legislative requirements.

If that were here, the captain would be looking for a new job due to discussing a personnel file. Consent is irrelevant. And some records people would have their feet held to the fire for not purging ancient records. A motorist gets a ticket 20 years ago for speeding and pays it, it automatically disappears from his record in a reasonable amount of time. The same applies to a police officer up here who's transgression was swearing at a client or using emergency lighting at an inappropriate time.

Incidentally, plenty of departments lack quotas.
I've never heard of the story being refuted. It's several years old. Your disagreement with it also has nothing to do with the bigger picture. A professional would have been able to handle that situation without incident. Inflated ego bully with "power" handles it differently.

Likewise. I would have no trouble complying with the officer's demands. A few respectful "yes sir's" and "no sir's" might have been helpful, too...

Don't forget the "Ja, mein Fuhrer!"

Only ever say two things to a cop:
"This interaction is being recorded and saved off-site in real time."
And...
"Am I being detained or am I free to go?"

THAT'S IT.

That's not subservient, it's called being respectful to law enforcement...maybe you should learn the difference...maybe that will save your life one day...

I'll stick with "yes" and "no". If the lack of "sir" gets me killed by a cop, then so be it.

edit: if she's cute, I'll call her "Officer"

Then you might as well just say that anyone mistreated by a cop is out of luck. Yeah, you have a $10 million judgment against him...but he is a turnip. (As in, you can't get blood out of one.)

I think we can all agree that the police officer in the video made the arrest, but do some people think HE also killed her?

While I have no idea if this was a murder, suicide or something else, I don't know that the arresting officer would be responsible for her death days later. CNN reported that her bail was $5,000. While I'm no legal scholar, I assume that means she had her bail set by a judge in court and afterwards returned to jail (not a holding cell in the police station).

I further assume that the arresting officer is NOT a jail guard and would NOT have been in the jail when she died. I imagine he'd be working somewhere outside of the jail, at home asleep, shopping, doing house chores, or any number of things we do when we're not working.

Not necessarily, what if the cop is asking you a question?

Dunno about that hatt. grampi says a lack of respect could get you killed.

Let me guess. The cop will be justified to shoot first, ask questions later?

Yea, I don't think they respect kiss ups anyway. I do my talking in court. I've been many times and have only lost twice. The cop can write you for anything under the sun. When you take it to court you can embarrass him.

People need to take every ticket to court to discourage this overzealous stuff.

Isn't the yes sir guy just as guilty. Why should licking a cops boots make a difference in enforcement. Is it ethical to police in that manor?

I agree with you phiipp10. Anytime I've been pulled over and have gotten out,the cop totally wigs out and tells you to stay in your car. Imo he was a man who has a power trip that likes to bully women. And when she wouldn't allow that to happen,he got butt-hurt,started screaming at her, then opened her door, grabbed her,and tried to pull her out. What kind've "man" throws a hissy fit and starts bullying a woman around? Seriously, here's a grown man screaming at and then fighting a woman over a cigarette? She didn't threaten him in any way. If she had an attitude? So what. He's supposed to be the professional. Hand her the citation, wish her a nice day,and move on.

I'm not following?

What's there not to follow? Obviously a huge majority of Americans are fine tossing the entire constitution out the window, except for the second amendment. That one is sacred.

Some of you are taking this way out of context...nobody is saying you need to be "subservient", or "kiss the cop's boots" if you're stopped by a cop....it's called common courtesy...unfortunately, many in today's society don't know what this is...

Why would anyone with half a brain help .gov agents conduct an investigation of you? That's what those questions are for and why you're fool if you participate.

Respect is earned not automatically granted.

When the cops start weeding out their bad apples and obeying their superiors instead of whining like little children, maybe then they'll start to earn some respect back.
