I figure people light up when they're pulled over to remain in control of something. They can't drive until the cop is done... might as well be in charge of that butt. That said, would you smoke at a job interview or on a first date? Getting pulled over is an interview to getting a warning over a citation.

That said, in any first world country with the rule of law you should be able to talk to a cop in any tone that isn't overtly physically threatening and not endure any punishment beyond the original ticket.

I think the police need stricter psychological testing before hiring and at regular intervals on the job.

This isn't even a story. Had the non-compliant woman just signed the ticket (or accepted the warning) and shut her freaking mouth, she would have been on her way in 10 minutes. Instead she has to run her mouth on the side of the road. Typical Ferguson/Baltimore/Trayvon/social justice loser.


Woman kills herself a few days later. Good riddance. Not a large loss on society.

Absolutely correct. This would likely have been a routine traffic stop IF she would have put a lid on her attitude and just complied with the requests.

I watched the long version of the video.

While it's probably not deadly, a lit cigarette can be a weapon. Police often tell people that they interact with to put their cigarette down. This is reasonable, and I would do the same.

This has nothing to do with what happened to this person while in jail.

Yeah, I keep coming back to that same thought. This video really doesn't have anything to do with her (alleged) suicide. Even so, they both misbehaved, they were both in the wrong, IMO. A police officer CAN order you out of your vehicle, and you must comply. Failure to do so can result in force to remove you. The Supreme Court has held this many times. No reason is needed for an officer to command you out of your car, which I think is a bit strange, but that's how it is. She got mouthy and (I assume?) was trying to get under his skin. Well, it worked! Calling him all those names after she was in cuffs, resisting over and over. He let it get to him and acted improperly and aggressively. They were both in they wrong.

He gave the subject a "lawful order" to exit the vehicle and she repeatedly refused. The entire series of events after that is the responsibility of the female subject. Including her hanging herself.

This is not Nazi Germany and the cops are not the ss. Go on a cop forum and listen to how they talk. These guys think they own the job. They think they have a job for life and are above the general public.

I was stopped a couple of months ago coming home late from the drive in movies. I was in a 30 going exactly 30 I see lights coming up on me at an amazing speed, must have been doing 80. My license plate bulb was dim. Not out. Dim. I'm glad we have these guys to take care of things like that. It was probably the most exciting thing he did all night.

One time I was given a "Failure to obey a lawfully posted sign" $75 dollar fine instead of $200 with points. and once when I was going 53 in a 35 I was written up for going 49...hug difference

BC we are smart enough to understand that 99.999% of encounters with bad people end the way they are supposed to. While others in their daily lives are luckey if they bat over 50%.

Al is right in that disposition can play a huge role. Race of course can as well, but so can just the cop you are interacting with. Every person is different and that has been my experience with dealing with the police over the years, no one encounter is the same, though I admit that I've never been treated badly, but let off? No, I've been "profiled" for driving a BMW too, it happens.

I had something like that happen to me. I got off work at 4 am. I drove in a hooptie 87 corolla in 2000, no a/c, hole in muffler, cracked windshield. The first cop pulled out of a convenience store (I saw him pull out when I passed the store) and tailgating me for a good mile before he turned on the blue lights. He must have thought I was a thug, when he saw the beater I was driving. When they saw I was a clean guy white guy, everything was cool. He asked me what I was doing out late, I said I got off from work. He saw I was wearing my Fedex uniform shirt. The other cop car came from the other direction, he said he had to drive "100 mph to catch up with me" The cop must have radioed for back up. He didn't find nothing on me, but He wrote me a ticket for 40 in a 30 and the two cop cars left. I thought, "what the heck was that all about?" I was 22 at the time and lived in a poor neighborhood at the time. I was in college too. This was in Memphis, TN.
