Yes it's taxes, but just think where the US debt level would be today if you were paying what the rest of the western world pays retail on imported gas. In a far better place.
I don't know about that...that would be a tough balancing act. If Americans are expected to be able to afford $6-$8 gas, then that extra cost is going to have to pay for some other expenses that currently come out of our own pockets...like healthcare, or similar expenses...if we had to pay European-like gas prices for gas only, our economy would completely tank...
The money would be wasted not used to pay down debt or even to fix our failing roads and bridges. History tells us this. All $6-$8 gas would do is totally crush our economy. $4 a gallon gas put it in a 2-3 year recession. Will people never learn? We are going to get a refresher course here this summer as gas keeps climbing( totally unfounded as well ). Things are already taking a hit at $3.75. All $4+ will do is throw us backward and the little progress( if any )made since the last run up to $4 will go away.
People would use less and less gas so less taxes taken in as well. Gas is not even at $4 nationally and people are already drastically cutting back. If it hit $6-$8 hardly anyone would be driving. People would lose jobs( either they couldn't afford to drive to work or the employer's would not be able to afford to stay in business )and not spend elsewhere as well if gas went that high. Maybe people making $100K a year could afford that but your average middle class and lower class families would be devestated by gas going that high.
You have to keep in mind if gas goes that high so does everything we buy and need. It is all related. Basic neccesities( food, heat, electric )would skyrocket and people would barely be able to pay for those things, if at all, other than buying gas. The old and sick would not be able to buy med's as they would have to choose between med's or food, heat, and lights. You would lose untold amounts of tax revenue in other areas if gas went that high not to mention the damage overall it would do as I have outlined. Just ridiculous to think $6-$8 a gallon gas would in anyway be a good thing.
Taxes are not the answer to every problem. It scares me how some think they are. BTW, how is that high tax burden working out for the rest of the Western world? Not too good. Been paying attention to the world economic reports with all the European countries having the same financial crisis we are or worse?
Wow.
