My wife's commute in her '04 Xj8 is as bad or worse than that - less than 9 miles a day spread over four equal length trips.
The only way I'm comfortable dealing with it is to drain and refill the sump about every six (6) weeks with synthetic 5w30 regardless of mileage. Whenever I find Synthetic 5w30 on closeout I get it, so the cost is actually relatively low.
Pretty wasteful, but I'd rather waste oil than the car
