Extended OCI's and New Car Warranties

Yeah, I believe that the onus is actually on the dealer to prove that your negligence in ignoring their service schedule resulted in the failure...

That being said, I'd err on the side of caution.

I haven't read this entire thread so forgive me if has already been covered.

As a former service manager I can say that the need for maintenance records seldom comes up unless there is evidence of abuse or neglect.

My practice was to get the factory involved if I believed that there may be difficulty in having the warranty claimed paid. Most of the service managers I know did the same.

There is no "revocation of warranty". There can be denial of warranty for an uncovered event.

Aftermarket extended warranties usually are different. Many of them seemed to look for an excuse not to pay the claim. Often they require a teardown for inspection before sending an investigator. The customer is on the hook to pay for the teardown if the claim is denied.

I always have my new cars serviced on schedule by the main dealer until the warranty has expired. Good insurance, however I check the car before and after a service as I do not trust them.

First congrats to Jim for surviving being a service manager. It's a very stressful job.

I don't know how long since you've been a service manager, but right now GM is looking for every excuse to deny warranty claims, or chargeback the ones that they've paid.

As a consumer, don't give any manufacturer an excuse. Follow the schedule.

Changing your oil according to the schedule (or before) is pretty cheap insurance and IMO it's totally worth avoiding the argument in the service bay. With some of my vehicles, getting warranty items taken care of that were completely unrelated to maintenance (2002 Altima ECU reflash via TSB comes to mind) was enough of a headache, having to get the dealership general manager involved. You have to pick your battles with this industry, and I choose to minimize mine in ways that I can. And, I enjoy changing my oil so it's not something I dread or put off until the last possible mile.
