Anyone taking full advantage of Amsoil's extended OCI's?

Anyone pushing other than Amsoil into the double your mileage arean that Amsoil promotes?

Some people are, in fact a decent amount of people are doing an extended oil change interval, but they don't post on BITOG. Full advantage? Not many - many folks change oil at convenient times, a huge bonus of extended OCI's.

Double? Sure other people are doing that. You've been here 7 years almost to the day. Many posts to read.

Pablo's right, there are many threads if you have a look around:

There's one guy here doing 40000 mile OCIs, albeit his vehicle burns some oil, about a quart every 2-3k.

Another is doing 20k+ miles.

Personally I've only gone to 12k, but that was several years ago before I started using Amsoil oil filters. Once I've finished my thick vs thin test, the plan is to work back up to something beyond the OLM (which is usually around 10k) and see how far it will last. (Yes Pablo I will adhere to the 1 year maximum LOL)

I am assuming you are using Amsoil?

What bike r u running that in? Are you running the filter for the full 10-15k?

Does the Amsoil guarantee (or the M1 for that matter) even apply to motorcycles?

My apologies, I missed that this was in the cycle forum....my post was auto related and I am not sure about the Amsoil recommendation for motorcycles.

I was always under the impression that Amsoil did tout a double your change interval for their Motocycle oils. Maybe I have misunderstood that. M1 I always thought recimmended staying with the manufacturers interval.

i have to LAUGH extremely hard at exteneded oci's

even more so from an amsoil expert/jobber/seller

your company says to change at 5hrs of motor use.
so double would be 10hrs.

compared to SRT that makes it only 2-3x more expensive
and yet since the oil is actually thrashed at 5hrs...now im using wornout oil
for and extra oci...

OR

is that 5hrs the double of 2.5hrs that others see?
which at 5hrs now makes it just 4x more expensive.

OH MY!!!!

The only reason I ever consider doing an extended OCI is on bikes that are very difficult to change the oil. It's a 10 minute job on my BWM's, so they get a fresh drink every 5k miles, per the manual. Same for my WR426 and TTR230.....very easy....regular changes.

But on the KTM 950 Adventure.....it's a pain in the butt. That 3k recommended OCI is always stretched to 5k miles, but as I have posted in other threads, I use Rotella T3/T4 and have complete peace of mind for $11 a gallon.

I won't trash Amsoil or any other boutique oils because I know they are excellent (I've used them many times), but in my opinion, even with extended drains in motorcycles....they are still very, very expensive compared to excellent HDEO's.

And by the way, everyone better pay close attention to the size of your sump. My WR only has a 1.8 quart capacity and the TTR is 1.5 quart, so trying to do extended drains in those is absolutely foolish. My Beemers and KTM sumps are 4 quarts.

........

I suppose it's possible that the "silent majority" of extended OCI users don't post on oil forums. In the Harley world, 10k changes look very doable with Amsoil. I wonder though in the Honda world with 8k factory intervals how many are willing to go 16k between changes.

At 66k on my Harley 103, dino oil at 5k intervals has shown to be a non event. I haven't however pushed the envelope. 10-15k OCI's would put me in the once a year arena and seems very intriguing.

Looking at Mystik 15w/50 with an equal TBN of Amsoil MCV, I gotta think it could go 10k too. Getting 10k out of $3.00 per qt oil, would be a grand slam!

If successful, I could join the multitudes who don't discuss such things.

Boy am I a bone head. I too, did not realize when this thread popped up in RECENT (NEW) TOPICS it's in the MC sub-form. My apologies.

Most of my MC oil customers change their oil once a year and just don't go anywhere near an extended OCI. Amsoil once a year doesn't even phase them.

yes if all you did was pour 4-5qts into a 2wheeled 1940's car motor and lublublub it at 3-4000rpm
a few times over the course of 12months....its a great oil on its own...and with such use of no
impact to the wallet. the insurance for the month it sits costs more than the oil change.

if on the other hand, you put that oil in motor that makes more than 2hp per cubic inch...your results may vary greatly.

By those metrics, My bike will fit the criteria quite well. I just filled with my last qts. of Brad Penn. By spec, it should be extendable as well. I will give that whirl at 10k first.

I don't see my $280.00 a year insurance as over priced. I do find all flavors of MC oil priced over the top. The cheap racing oils are starting to creep into boutique pricing as well. Which is why I started looking at the HDEOs. I have one source for the Brad Penn that is reasonably priced. It just takes a full day to drive and pick up. Otherwise all other sources are priced out of whack.

In some circles, a harley/air cooled engine is the most abusive environment an oil can be used in. That may or may not be true, but the UOAs prove that the conventionals are holding up. Now it's time to see how far the drain can be extended.
