So I have been taking care of this 05 kia spectra for a while now and about a year ago I upped it to 10k drains with PU. The car has 167k on it and the last 30k have been extended drains. I never had a uoa done because the owner is too cheap...but it always looks ok when I change the oil. Not too dark or thick.
She drives 150 miles or more a day to and from work and it uses 1qt every 5k. Think I can stretch it out to 15 or 20k? It seems like im having to change the oil way too often

Try to convince the owner to pay for a UOA with the rationale that it could pay for itself immediately if you can double the OCI from 10k to 20k, or in two OCI if you can up it to 15k. Maybe offer to pay for part or all of the UOA if it comes back indicating that 10k is as long as you can extend the OCI?

This has it pretty much nailed. Highway miles are easy on an engine so she can very likely extend the drain interval however without data a person can't know for sure.
This is an instance where spending a few bucks now could save money later.

That would defeat the purpose because it would be me Crawling under the car to change the filter. My main objective is to work on it less.

I guess a Mobil 1 EP filter or similar high capacity filter would negate the need for a filter change.

10K OCIs have been a breeze for my engines since 1978 in all sorts of engines with M1 oils. I would think PP or PU would serve you well also. Many here are afraid of 10K OCIs with a quality synthetic which I don't understand. I have several friends and family doing this with success for many years. Not one has had a problem, and some are going well past 10K.

It is your duty as a BITOG-er to FORCE (ok, convince) your neighbor to get a UOA done. Tell her that not only will it show the condition of the oil and if she can go longer on the oil, saving money in the long run, but it will also show the condition of the engine, telling her if she should keep on keepin' on or dump the car before she BLOWS!!!

That should get her to cough up the coinage for a UOA with TBN AND TAN

A good uoa would be nice. Might be worth saving my time to just pay for it. It would be nice to only have to change it every 20k with off the shelf oil

There aren't many of us left who help out people.........
Just change it twice a year with the knowledge the Big Guy is nodding his head with approval of your good deeds!!!
Good Job Sir!!!

Does the old lady have a turbo engine? Does she do 120 on the freeway? So why the synthetic? Doesn't everybody know by now that dino oil will protect just as well as synthetic? It amazes me how people on here promote such waste!

Just kidding!

He is already doing 10k drains,he wants to go longer.
And I'm pretty sure there was a uoa posted not to long ago that showed EP was toast at 12k,so not every application is suited to those drain intervals with your beloved m1

I think with this much distance, all highway, a day the owner of the Kia should use Amsoil SSO with 25k miles OCI. If oil consumption is 1 quart every 5k miles, then add a quart at 5k, 10k, 15k, 20k then change oil at 25k.

I understand that and I agree that not "EVERY" engine should do 10-15K OCI. Just saying too much alarm is attributed to 10K and longer OCIs with quality synthetics. Also M1 oils are not "BELOVED" by me as we are discussing oil, but M1 oils are "TRUSTED" by me as my long experience with these products have enabled me to do so.

It sounds like this user is doing about 40k miles per year and electrolover is doing 4x oil changes per year. Maybe a compromise would be 13k OCI's and 3x changes per year.

I had a similar dilemma with my wife's Prius doing 20 kmiles per year. I was doing 5 to 6 kmile OCI's and 3 or 4 changes per year. It was mostly highway miles so I upped it to 10k miles and 2x per year and it seems to be handling it effortlessly. The oil always looks good when I drain it, whether of not it's full synthetic or blend (I use durablend dx1 in winter).

I don't see the point of going past 10K with any oil. Unless you are driving an old beater/leaker/burner you don't care about, 10K is time to change both oil and filter. There is a point of diminishing returns. At 10K you got plenty of value out of your purchase. Change it all out and clear the contamination out.
