My wifes 06 Toyota Avalon is a PITA to change the oil filter on so I'm going to start changing the filter every other oil change! I have ordered the Assenmacher Toy64mm filter socket from Amazon which will make it much easier but I'm still going to start changing it every other oil change. I use Pennzoil conventional every 5,000 miles so I think it will be ok. I think Toyota went backwards with the cannister oil filters! My 1966 Chevelle SS 396 had a cannister oil filter for goodness sakes...! And besides I was 18 years old then....I'm in my 60's now and I don't get up and down as well as I used to...LOL! Any thoughts or opinions are appreciated. Thanks

Using a quality filter for two 5K intervals should be fine. Key words... quality filter.
Honda's been recommending it for years in many vehicles and their OE/dealer filters aren't even what I'd consider "quality". I'm just about due for an oil change in our VUE and am going to leave the Fram Ultra on there for another interval. In total, it'll probably be on there for around 13K.

I would use a Wix XP and you can run them 2 or 3 OCIs with ease, especially if you are only going 5,000 mile intervals.
Honda specs 2 OCIs per filter, and they are FRAMS.
A Honda OCI is 10,000-11,000 miles, so they think it is fine for 22,000 miles for a regular cardboard/cellulose filter.
Wix XP are wire backed full synthetic media made for extended OCIs.

If it makes you feel better, I had been changing oil filter once a year up to 13-15k miles in my '94 LS400 since new. The OCI with dino is 7-8k/6mo and 13-15k/12mo with syn. The car has more than 340k miles and no engine problems.

Two 5k mile OCIs on one quality filter is actually a good idea. The product will become more efficient in partical entrapment, and your fiscal plan becomes more efficient as well.
It's a win-win.
(This is presuming the engine is in sound mechanical condition and not a known sludger, etc, and that warranty is not of concern).

I think you would be fine going 15k on a extended drain filter. like wix xp, napa platinum, fram ultra, purolator synthetic.

I do oil changes for 6 cars in the family and the only time I have left a filter on for more than one OC is a canister where it's not holding a pint of dirty oil.
I also don't use yesterday's dish water to do today's dishes, so maybe I'm a little OCD.

falken, If Hondas can go 22,000 miles on a Fram I think my Toyota will be fine with the Wix XP for 3/ 5,000 mile oil changes. HTSS-TR, Good to know you have good experience with your 94 Ls400 with once a year and up to 15,000 miles on the filter changes. dnewton3, I know a slightly dirty air filter filters better and I guess it applies to oil filters as well. Malo83, I've always installed a new filter with every oil change as well. Oil and filters are much better than when you and I were pups... hence the original question. I'm old school but not too stubborn to change. I didn't say I couldn't get up and down...just that I couldn't as well as I used too.

With that mindset you might as well stick to the 3k intervals....
I just hit 20k on my oil filter with a total of 4 OCI . I'll post pics later tonight

I won't use the Wix XP which I am assuming is the same as the Napa Platinum because the bypass is in the dome end. Their other filters like Napa gold and silver have a thread end bypass.
