If High Mileage oils have esters, don't they clean up that nasty mess left in the engine?
esters in HM are they cleanly?

I'm not sure High Mileage oils have esters. Chevron told me that theirs is just Group II oil that is about 10cSt thicker than normal, with seal conditioners.
You make me laugh...10cst thicker? that would be like a 20cst....a 10w70? I think not...
ok.....most High Mileage oils are a 12cst and that is awesome...but they supposedly have esters for swell...don't these esters clean too?

I think he meant 1cst thicker so towards the 12cst side rathter than 10-11.
Whether it be from esters or something else, seems one of the selling points of high mileage oils is higher detergency which presumably will over time clean out some of the crud.

Laugh all you want. But take a look at a data sheet.
Chevron High Mileage 10W30 @40C is 83.1 cSt. Regular Chevron 10W30 is 73.5, which I believe is close to 10.
At 100C it's indeed 12 vs. 10.8. I should have been clear which temp I was referring to.
The extra cleaning agents are probably just increased levels of detergent additives, such as Ca and Mg, etc.

Esters for seal swell WILL clean and soften sludge, lower the aniline point and will clean deposits BUT they are used at low levals so how much cleaning by themselves is a guess.

I'm not sure why they would use esters for seal swell. I believe they use esters only with PAO's for seal swell..I could be wrong though.

High Mileage oils are sold for "leaky" engines thus they would have a seal swell ester. I thought the question was if esters for seal swell how much do they clean?

afaik, there is ester content. The question is do they provide cleaning action. I don't know, but the detergent levels are close to HDEO...best of all worlds, imo. A 5w30 like GTX HM at 12cSt is darn close to a synthetic 5w-40 for much less $$$. I'd love to know the HT/HS of that oil. I blend it with a jug of 10w-40 in Mother-in-Law's leaky A6. Winter = 5q of 5w30 topped with the 10w-40 jug. It actually has stopped burning/leaking now anyway.
