Bring on the cold BlazerLT, last year was a cold one for this banana belt, I hope it gets twice as cold this year, I enjoy winter. We get all the warm weather fronts and chinooks off the Rockies to west of us mixed in with spurts of winter. We get many brown Christmas's here. I grew up 30 miles south of NWT in Sask when I was younger, lived right of top of "Old Lady Athabaska" I miss those cold crisp fresh air winters.

El Nina kicking in I guess, who knows what it may bring, I hope it brings on winter. Got 5 cords of firewood ready, hope it comes.

Maybe I should get out and put this 0-40 in the Cummins.

Just bumping this thread up to see if any of the Esso XD-3 junkies have anything further to note on the topic or if they have seen anything different with the cold weather this winter?

Bring it on guys!

Need your feedback.

went from a semisyn motomaster to XD3 0w30...smoother running engine at high revs and awesome cold starts!

Just picked up new X-Trail yesterday, got 500kms on motor with factory conventional, 1000 more kms by end of week and in with this super oil XD3 syn. Cant stand having conventional oil in engine rather than XD3 now but decided to seat in bit with the conventional, then the good syn stuff, warm weather now so got lucky using conventional.

My Altima started without a growl in -35C with severe windchill cooling the block so bad the Block heater was an ornament, then we totaled the Altima, start all over breakingin X-Trail now and back to XD3 asap.

Dodge Cummins doing great with the 0-40 XD3, quick pressure up cold. I do find that the 0-40 XD3 in Cummins will show low oil pressure on restart after hot engine is shut off 15 minutes. Terry explained to me a heavy duty oil can show this charactoristic. (Oil pressure is good as I cool turbo prior to the 15 min shutdown.) Oil pressure is high at cold start up and regular running temps on highway, only the restart on hot engine is engine oil pressure down. I now keep it idling the 15 minutes rather than shut down, long run I think that is better, this is only flaw I find with XD3 syn.

So far everyone that I had the XD-3 0W-40 introduced into the crankcase said it's good. Not that it is that cold around here,0 -10 on some mornings, but the 3 Jeep 4.0l engines and the 1 Jimmy 4.3l that this oil was installed in people have no complaints, fairly new vehicles also 99-01.The young lady who owns the Jimmy actually asked me "did you put in a winter oil?" because she is rough with her Jimmy, starts and pedal to the metal drives around on dry pavement with the 4w on

etc.Actually commented on how nicely the Jimmy started up and ran in the morning as compared to other years.Trying to write this with a bad cold and fever...hope it makes some sense

Yip, cross the border and look for a ESSO bulk distribution station.

I walked in, bought two cases, walked out.

And they have it, don't have them tell you they don't and remember to say SYNTHETIC.

Also, it doesn't say synthetic on the boxes so open and make sure you look at the bottles and make sure.

I'll have a 20,000km UOA posted here today or tomorrow. We had a couple weeks of -30 or lower weather out here recently and all my cars started great! No unusualy noise and (relatively) easy cranking.

Due to an ordering mishap, I now have over 250L of this stuff stockpiled...lol! It should last me nearly 2 years even with the miles my cars drive.

I was using Delvac 1 5W-40 with great results but the local Wal-marts don't stock it anymore. So I tried the XD3 in the 40W and it was better in the cold than the Delvac 1...not much, but better..The XD-3 is sold at all the local Wal-marts around here in the 40W and I have to go to the bulk dealer whom has bad hours for me.The guy (bulk Esso dealer) on St.Luke here in town is open 8-5 and closed on week-ends.I work 9-5 and have the week-ends off

I'll have to get over there on one of my days off and shop around for case deals....he sells Mobil oils also so may-be I can scoop up some Delvac 1 for the summer.

We can't get the Esso down in the states, can we?

edit: sorry, just read to the end...dummy!

I've had the 0W30 stuff in for 11,000km now (since end of November). It's great in the cold. We had a few weeks of -20C weather and the engine sounded great. Everyone at work using dino came in saying how their engines sounded like they were dying and I just smiled.

I'm changing my oil tomorrow and taking a sample for a used oil analysis. It will be an 11,000km used oil analysis on a GM 3.4L (I believe it's the same engine as Olympic's). I have a feeling that there is massive condensation in it, but we'll see what the numbers are when they come in.

Doesn't that engine call for 5w30?

Another question!

Where in the Detroit area can I purchase ESSO XD-3 Synthetic? I just purchased a new Chevy Colorado 4X4 with the new 3.5 five-cylinder. I'd like to try it after I reach around 3500 on the odometer.

Windsor? Sarnia? Look at Imperial Oil's website for a list of dealers in Canada.

It is a really thick 30 weight.

Next winter I probably will.I plug in both my Jeeps so morning cold starts are a non-issue.The drive home is a different thing ,after sitting in the open parking lot all day.On extremely cold days the Delvac 1 5W-40 and even the Mobil 1 10w30 would make my oil pressure come up slooow and the "check gauges" light would come on and "beep" for a second with the TJ's 4.0L.This was worse when I used the Mobil 1 oil filter and REALLY bad with the POS Bosch Premium I used once for a week then pitched it ("clicker" bypass valve don't work worth cr@p)now using the WIX "Sport Truck" oversize filter that is a great filter, with lotsa great features that was discontinued
