For those like myself in the great white north, I do enjoy WOT runs on the extremely cold days, such as those accompanying this "polar vortex"... -12F currently. For those not aware, horsepower in NA engines typically increases or decreases by approximately 3% every 1,000' deviation from sea level. The density altitude here this morning was about -3,300' or so...pretty impressive.
 
The trouble is while I get more HP, I also get less traction...so when I struggle for traction on a warm sunny day, it is impossible to find any traction on a day here in Iowa where the high is 1F
 
I owned a Harley once that ran great in the cool mornings going to work. In the afternoon going home it didn't run near as good.
This explains why my old bike ran great during the 6am commute to the office.
But on the 3pm drive home at +90F, it was a total dog!

There is only a 1200 ft difference in elevation across the whole state, how much traction do you need... j/k.
 
This is especially true with modern turbocharged engines
Sadly except Mazda. My one complaint is that they eliminate boost below 20*F, below 3rd gear. That said, I got sideways a plenty on the way home yesterday morning, and had some real stress crawling up a hill with all 4 tires scrabbling, at 2mph, past what looked to be a stuck state trooper's Charger. The electronic nannies in this car are absolutely insane! But I could do without t he boost cut.

I don't seem to get the point of or what there is to gain with WOT's in the extreme cold temperatures.
 
I wonder how much of it is offset by colder tires being less flexible and higher driveline losses due to thicker oil & grease. Going to guess the increase in air drag (due to more dense air) is not a factor here, not at normal speeds.
 
boosted engines generally see a quicker boost the colder it is + even a little more, BUT those with ENHANCED tunes see bigger differences!! bigger free flowing exhausts boost quicker ALL the time air in air out + if you have a boost gauge its easily confirmed. its all about your ECU programing + the info your sensors send to it but there are "tricks to fool the ECU!! a good pro tune-chip that adds fuel as well is best because a too lean mix can burn HOLES in the pistons!! todays DI engines can + do boost more + faster safely than my port injected 2001 Jetta + now a 2001 audi TT + take a look at GoAPR for an eye opener what the VAG-volkswagen auto group engines can safely do with enhanced tuning!!

Yea I've noticed nothing in the Tacoma, other than less fuel mileage. Same thing with the Camry, no performance gain. Still as fast as a snail with a hard on... :LOL:
 
I think the vehicles you notice it most on are the ones with mediocre cooling systems that aggressively retard timing. The LS1 F-body is an excellent example of such a car.
