Engineering Explained: How brake-by-wire works etc.

My 06 Benz E320 CDI has SBC Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) is an Electro Hydraulic system. Mine worked aprox 121k miles. Took it to dealership and it was covered by MB 25 years and unlimited miles warranty.
Very good system and car stops on a dime.

Prius has been using their hybrid tech for a loooong time. Drive by wire is a key component.
In our Tesla, the regen level is one of the settings.
Highest level returns the most energy, buy man you gotta take your foot off the gas pedal slowly! Too strong for my liking.

Call me old fashion but I like driving and I like the feed back I get from traditional steering and brakes. Power steering took some of that away but some systems are better than others. I also understand that this system will make it easier for the accident avoidance and self driving cars to control the braking. But I also see the same growing pains that happened with air bags and some fly by wire throttle were people swear they were on the brakes and the car accelerated by itself. How many rear end collisions were people swear they were on the brake but the car did not respond and we finally find out 5 or 6 years later their were problems under certain situations. If you have ever had a glitchy ECU do weird things you might be a bit skeptical. Not going is inconvenient, not stopping is something else all together.

My E55 had no problems either but I sold it way back in 2013. There was no brake feel at all but the 8-piston Brembos would stop the car faster than crashing into a brick wall.

From what I’ve heard it’s a very reliable system just comically expensive to fix anything other than the accumulator ball and a warranty takes care of that problem. I think after a few hundred thousand pedal cycles it’ll pop up a red warning to inspect the system or something like that.

One thing I did have was gas smell issues but the dealer decided to throw me a bone and fix it, this was before the recall campaign.
