I have a 2004 kia sorrento with 85,000 miles on it. I think I averaged between 8 and 10,000 miles between oil changes using the proper weight supertech walmart oil. the engine seems to have a kick in the lifters once the engine warms up. I am assuming that it probably has some sludge build up because I haven't change the oil as often as I should. it doesn't seem to burn any oil between changes. what would you guys suggest ido to clean up the engine and get rid of the tick, if anything.

I wouldn't really worry about it too much. I would use a a major brand "syn" like PP, M1 for the 8-10k OCI's. If you want to do 1-2 short 2-3k OCI's with PYB you could do that to clean up a little if need be before starting your regular regimen with a better lube.

Are you sure its the lifter and not a loud fuel injector? My ciera has really loud injectors that sound like valves ticking.

I think they are self adjusting. Not sure about the injector niise possibility.

I would also try to rule out a loose plug or an exhaust manifold leak since a leak at one cylinder can often be misjudged as a lifter tick.

It's doubtful the tick will go away on it's own. At this point we think the tick relates to the lifters, but we're really not sure. If the noises could be pinned down with the aide of a mechanic's stethoscope that would be helpful.

Opinions vary. Not everyone is going to get the same result using the same product. Advise from those who have actually used the product to solve your particular problem might be preferable over those who haven't.

Do you need a cleaner or a product which adds a layer of protection? Many have found that Liqui Moly MOS2 has made their engine run smoother and quieter. Usually NAPA has the best price.

If you feel you could benefit from a cleaner obviously there are many options. You could purchase a oil that is marketing as having superior cleaning properties. Beyond that there are products such as Kreen, MMO, and ARX.

Unfortunately Kreen might not be an option for you since you live in California.

Marvel Mystery Oil is a product you can use in your oil or gas. In the oil it's advised not to keep it in longer than 3,000 - 5,000 miles. Do not exceed a 25% dosage rate. A smaller percentage will lessen the chance of your oil dropping out of it's viscosity grade. A good place to purchase MMO is Wal-Mart.

Auto-Rx has recently revamped their basic instructions and oil recommendations. The clean phase is now 3,000 miles when using conventional oil, and 4,000 miles when using synthetic. If you have questions about ARX and your application you can always consult with them via phone or e-mail.

Yes, definitely consider that. Had that happen on a BMW some years back.

Going back in the way-back time capsule, I recall a mechanic telling my dad to use MMO in my mom's 1970 Mercury to solve a long-term lifter tick, and my pop thinking, "Snake oil?? Wuzzup wit dat?" He tried it....it worked like a charm within a few days.

Yep, it still works like a charm. I stopped more lifter ticks than I can count using MMO. For less than $5 for a qt I'd give it a try if I were the OP.
