It's doubtful the tick will go away on it's own. At this point we think the tick relates to the lifters, but we're really not sure. If the noises could be pinned down with the aide of a mechanic's stethoscope that would be helpful.
Opinions vary. Not everyone is going to get the same result using the same product. Advise from those who have actually used the product to solve your particular problem might be preferable over those who haven't.
Do you need a cleaner or a product which adds a layer of protection? Many have found that Liqui Moly MOS2 has made their engine run smoother and quieter. Usually NAPA has the best price.
If you feel you could benefit from a cleaner obviously there are many options. You could purchase a oil that is marketing as having superior cleaning properties. Beyond that there are products such as Kreen, MMO, and ARX.
Unfortunately Kreen might not be an option for you since you live in California.
Marvel Mystery Oil is a product you can use in your oil or gas. In the oil it's advised not to keep it in longer than 3,000 - 5,000 miles. Do not exceed a 25% dosage rate. A smaller percentage will lessen the chance of your oil dropping out of it's viscosity grade. A good place to purchase MMO is Wal-Mart.
Auto-Rx has recently revamped their basic instructions and oil recommendations. The clean phase is now 3,000 miles when using conventional oil, and 4,000 miles when using synthetic. If you have questions about ARX and your application you can always consult with them via phone or e-mail.
