I would stay with whatever the manufacturer recommends. Atleast till warranty is up. If warranty is not an issue you could go a bit thicker than recommendations. Just a thought.
IF he is using a 20w-50, that should be PLENTY for his conditions. Stop and go traffic and lots of idling are easy on the engine EXCEPT for the fact that the fuel dilutes the oil. So, really, a 15w40 should actually be just fine. A UOA would let you know if the oil you are using is shearing enough to even worry.
Sure ..but how long do you intend to leave it in the engine? Cost will surely be a factor. How many hours a day do you operate the vehicle? How much at one time?

planning a once a year OCI, and drives about 2-3 hours a day since its always a congested traffic condition in the Philippines and i doubt if it can accumulate 14k miles a year.
as for the cost, am willing to put money just for the oil.
i want them to try Amsoil as this has been my oil on all my vehicles including my mower, if i have to ship it to them to the Philippines, i will do it.
Philipines may have the worst traffic congestions ever on a daily basis.
Never been to the Philippines but traffic in Chicago, Illinois can get pretty nasty, too. Got stuck in stop and go traffic for 3 hours, and barely moved more than a mile or two.
