I was about to change my oil and add Marvel Mystery Oil, when I started reading my car guide, and it said in quote...

Never use: "Additional engine oil additives,
oil treatments or engine treatments.

Does any ones car guide say the something about there engine. Don't feel safe using that stuff now.

The reason is most likely that it becomes the user's responsibility to mix the additives to the right proportion, instead of say half of the oil in the crankcase being MMO and the oil thus becoming way too thin and allowing for too much wear.

The only real reason for using MMO is for cleanup intervals, IMO.

Since the manual was written, it's probably under the assumption liability wise that they don't want you to be adding the 'wrong' additives, not that they are bad in themselves.

Though, I'm willing to say, unless you have a dirty engine, using the right oil/choosing the right mileage is probably all you ever need. Personally, I'm willing to do experiments, but I choose to underdose to notice any small improvements for any touted additive and I won't just add 'anything'.

It's better to add a few hundred miles before you change the oil rather than dilute the oil formulation that has been highly engineered & well thought out. IMO...

Marvel Mystery oil has been run for years and years in both engine and fuel and at its treated volume....and some more volume as reported by many on this site and it has been winner.

Your choice!

its good for a clean up. just get a heavier oil because it thins it down some. i like running the next grade up with 20% MMO for a 3k oci.
my manual says the same thing btw

I prefer to just spend my dollars on better oil rather that additives. I sell my vehicles at somewhere between 120,000 to 150,000 using good oil and factory recommended change interval without any additives. I think 99% of additives are a waste of money if you run good oil and change at the factory recommendations.

MMO should only be used in the oil if you are looking to clean the motor some internally. If not, then it isn't needed.

Just beware like others have stated, it does dilute the motor oil and makes it a bit thinner so it may be best to step up to a thicker oil and add the MMO which would result in your spec grade for the most part.

Just make sure you don't add too much and you should be fine.

If you have been up on the maintance and your motor looks clean inside, then there is no reason to use an addative or MMO or etc...

I know when they say that just used a good oil brand every OCI, but I bought this car used. Since then I have been taken good care of it. I am not this car original owner, and I been having this car for about 4yr now, so that's why I been wanting a little cleaning.

What could be a grade higher than 5w30, 10w30?

Or perhaps something like 10w40 if you are going to use an entire Quart of MMO for the entire span of the interval, and obviously, since it's for cleaning, it'd be best to do this in the summer then.

If you're using a quart of MMO or less it's totally unnecessary to user a higher grade of oil. My UOAs do not show ANY thinning after using it for 4K of an 8K OCI

putting anything not oil in my crankcase make sme nervous. i presently have it overfull half a quart, the half a quar tbeing MMO

im sure it will help clean up my sludge monster w/o expensive things

then again, im thinking of RP for the same thing, even if mixing just a quart in

idk.

technically, yes

everyone says its obsolete
but cars spec'd for it run fine on it
and with MMO its probably just below a "10" and just below a "30" because MMO is thin
most would go a grade higher for peace of mind

please rebut but im saying what most would do if adding a known thinner/solvent

Most, if not all manufacturers recommend against using any type of additives. Use them at your own risk if your vehicle is still under warranty.

Oil has additives in it.
So, additives are not bad.
A car mfr. can not rely on Joe Civilian to be the best judge of what to use. Of course they must show disfavor concerning additional additives. Who knows what someone may put in?
But there ARE good things available for special needs and general use.

another option is running an oil like PU or PP for 3k oci to clean it up. that is what i did to my wife/s explorer. i ran PP for 3 3k ocis. its as clean as the day it was built.

Kreen is another option if your in a hurry

Take a peek in the oil fill see how hardware looks in there & look for buildup under the cap to see if you actually have an issue to address.

I would still not recommend additives unles at the end of a OCI.
