Went into my mate's workshop the other day to buy some oil that meets Nissans oddball requirement (will be Mobil 3000 synthetic when it comes in - Mobil tech gave me what sounds finally like a reason for Nissan wanting nothing more than CF-4, namely that they've told mobil that with their OHC diesels, soot dispersion wears out the valvetrain).

Anyway, he was bitter, as his Nissan Navara 3L direct Injection turbo had lost two pistons after a gear change towing a trailer up a hill (It's rated to tow 3,000Kg)...he's got another 2 waiting for engine rebuild after grenading also.

Looks like Nissan got a bit too carried away with this engine.

It's a 4 valve per cylinder direct injection turbodiesel, with EGR, and a crankcase ventilation system that discharges straight into the turbo inlet.

I've known that there's a lot of oil gets through, as the pressurised induction hoses all weep.

In order to get the EGR to work on an "unthrottled" diesel, they've modified the "normal" operation of the shutoff butterfly to partially close under EGR conditions, reducing the boost in the inlet, and driving the EGR into the manifold...this can be as frequently as every gear change this butterfly partially closes.

The evidence appears that the combination of soot and oil and junk can get this butterfly to stick, following a high load downshift up a hill, which under airs, and overfuels the engine. My mate reportd that he downshifted, felt a lack of power, then saw blue smoke everywhere.

There's also a "swirl" butterfly to close one intake port under light load conditions "to improve driveablility", where it really seems only to improve EGR mixing.

This morning I blocked the EGR.

Before I could mod the butterfly controls, boss needed the car.

She came back wildly happy that an intersection she normally kangaroos/snatches at was smooth as silk..."what did you do to the car"

Tried it myself, and very impressed at the responsiveness in the lower rev range.

So does a "Butt dyno" count if it's your spouse, and she doesn't know what on Earth you are doing in the shed ?
 
What year,what engine? As we have no emission testing in NZ (only a smoke test),we blank the EGR on all Japanese diesels - they load up intakes,cut power and cause smoke.

The direct injection common rail Mitsi engines are doing well,with a couple of problems.One is the exhaust particle filter regeneration....it comes on after about 5km at 100kph,not likely to happen in a rural area of NZ.So they are being reprogrammed to do it more often at 80kph.

The other is the EGR - the intakes are being blocked down to about 20mm.They also have a MAP sensor into the manifold with a tiny port,less than a mm dia....we have to drive a pin punch or drill down to clear after they set a code.Looking through Mitsi service procedures,it looks like it's a service item,not a warranty issue.So our 70,000km service is a major - remove manifold and clean,not a quick fix.The EGR can't just be blocked like the old engines as it's all computer controlled.

We've only done a couple,as the 4M41 only came out in the Triton a couple of years ago.Believe it or not,the common rail 4D56 is trouble free so far,being one of the most maligned diesels from Japan.The 4M41 has been dropped from the Triton for 2010,and they have the old 2.5 4D56 putting out more torque than the 3.2 4M41.
 
Silk, 2003 Navara with the ZD30 3.0.

It's a computer controlleed injection pump, Direct injection, DOHC thing. Normal wastegated turbo. Nissan tried all sorts of things, and in the Navara, it looks sort of "cheap" in implementation.

Don't get me wrong, I love the vehicle.

The Patrols started failing very early in the piece, with Nissan coming to the party, and arguing that it was Patrol specific. They still fought tooth and nail that the fault was owner manufactured by using the wrong oil blah blah.

It's progressed to the Navara, here (and apparently the UK)...and it's a very costly blow-up if/when it occurs).

If you disconnect the EGR, it gets upset, but doesn't notice the steel plate.

Fitting a catch can to it during next service, as people are getting 250ml/5,000km regularly...every pressurised hose joint on the intake has an oil weep, so there's something there.

Hmmmm,we have a Navara with ZD30 trade in on the yard - we had it in the workshop for a look over yesterday.There is red silicon on every joint,it has a road tube and oil leaks.Really nice vehicle,but I think they better flick it off at auction so it can't come back and bite them in the arse.
 
About 3 years ago, there was a load of information re "piston oil squirters" that were damaged by a robot during assembly, and caused a spate of problems. That was when Nissan were coming to the party...but they stopped doing that not long after.

I love the truck, economical, pretty zappy (moreso now coming out of corners)...This weekend was removing the complexities and trying to get it back into diesel mode.

BTW, I've had mine since new, and there's no orange/red silicone anywhere from the factory...yours has been opened.

We know - the head has been off,and it's leaking oil out of the head joint too.The 2.5 engine seems nice....got some real punch off the line.
