I am curious if Delvac 1 5w40 would be acceptable to run in my old lady's 2.5L VW beetle. VW spec 502 00 isn't listed in Mobil's approval listings for obvious reasons. I need to work within VW parameters to maintain warranty coverage. Any information/opinions would be appreciated. (I have 2 cases just sitting around the shop)

You'd be hard pressed to find a better oil to run in the engine, but it has zero VW certifications or approvals.

I would run it anyway; the chances of you having a lubrication failure with it are next to zero. You can always run it in your TDI instead (if you're not doing so already)...

AMSOIL 5w40 European car formula meets VW 502 00, and can also be used in your Jetta TDI. Delvac would work just find also, but Mobil does not recommend it and VW does not recommend it. At least with the AMSOIL, at least one of the two party's will stand behind the recommendation. Though, as scurvy said. lubrication related failure with Delvac would be unlikely

Does the Amsoil meet it, or is it actually on the approved list? I don't doubt that the Amsoil could obtain a slot on the list if they so desired and that they back up their product, but if it's actually certified or not is another matter.

As far as being close to the various European specs, without actually having them, Delvac 1 ESP 5w-40 is a good fit, but I can't see it being cheaper than the specified oil in the first place.

Devlac would be a good oil but neither it or the Amsoil are on VWs approved list and if you are worried about the warranty use an oil that is certified. . I have a 2001 Beetle with the 2.0 and have used Mobil 1 0w-40 which is on the apporoved list and can usually be found on sale somewhere for a good price. I ran one OC with German Castrol but it used more oil during the OC so I went back to the Mobil.

slammds - Scurvy said it pretty well.
Only thought I would add is IF that Delvac is too winter thick, you could run M1 0w40 and expect similar results and better start ups. May even have the VW certs or specs you are concerned about.
