Well, this is interesting.

I'm in the process of changing brands here with my cars, and found something interesting (at least to me, anyways)Ecotecs seem to really like PP...


Cobalt- went from M1 to PP. Car liked M1, but runs much smoother on PP then it did on mobil...idles quietier too...

Cavalier #2- switched from Napa synthetic to PP on this oil change. Exact same thing happened. Car idles much quietier on this oil.


This is tempting me to switch oils on cav#1, which has been running M1 since 2004. It's had the same oil so long I'm almost a afraid to change it.

Maybe it; s just dumb luck, maybe not. What do you guys think?
 
My daughter has a '03 Grand Am with an Ecotec. Currently running Mobil 1 Extended Performance. It's like giving a steak to someone asking for a sandwich. That engine runs well on anything. Nice change of pace to change the filter standing up.
 
Quieter is not always better.

I find that Group III synthetics are typically quieter than Group IV synthetics but it's generally agreed here that Group IV is superior as a base oil.

Likewise, 5w40 is always quieter than 5w20 in a car spec'd for 5w20 but that doesn't mean I should run 5w40

Ecos pretty much run anything....


I just think mine are trying to tell me something...

My daughter's ran wonderfully on Mobil 1 0w30 (10 Cobalt), then ran wonderfully on SynPower 5w30. I have some Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 I'll give a go next, but I'm w/ the rest, this engine runs on anything. lol
 
I ran PP in a 2.4L VVT Ecotec (2006 HHR) and got great used oil analysis with it.

Will be switching my new 2.2L VVT Ecotec (2010 HHR) to PP in the fall.

Not on an Ecotec. My 2000 2.2 made horrible timing chain noises at start up using a 5w-40 and 0w-40 oil. 5w-20 and 5w30 make no such noises during start up. In my personal experience, with the GM Ecotecs, thinner is better. There are a few awesome used oil analysis on Ecotecs using 5w-20.
 
I have an '05 Cobalt, and I've run Royal Purple, Mobil 1 0W-30, Castrol GTX and Castrol Edge, and I haven't noticed difference once they're up to operating temp.

I did notice a tapping noise during the first acceleration on a cold start with the RP, however. Don't know what that was, but it hasn't happened in a year, so I'm not too worried.
