Ecotec 2.2 Engine Whine?

When the engine is cold, an extra rich air/fuel mixture is required. That leads to a high concentration of unburnt fuel in the exhaust system. By adding air in the exhaust system, the fuel can be re-ignited, reducing hydrocarbon pollution. It also heats up the catalytic converter so that the rare metal catalysts can accelerate the conversion of HC and CO into CO2 and H2O.

Ive had 2 GMs with 3800s which had a similar noise. Turned out to be the tensioner pulley each time. The factory ones look like plastic to me, the replacements are steel.

i have the same problem on a chevy van.
sounds like its got a blower on it.
time to go over to motion industries and get a good bearing pressed into it.
the replacement on it now is 6 months old.
made in china of course!.
the plastic one i took off made a angry beehive sound at idle.

What did you replace? Tensioner Pulley?

Whenever the tensioner pulley went out on a GM car, all my employers would order a new Gates tensioner. That always worked well, and lasted a long time.

Am I correct in saying that you guys think the whine might be from the tensioner pulley?...I thought that would make a clacking noise if it went south

Goose, so your noise doesn't go away? Like I say, mine fades totally away once the engine comes up to temp. I've had bad idlers, tensioners, etc on other GMs. Those stayed constant.

yes.
its just a roller with a sealed ball bearing in the center.
bolts to the tensioner arm through the bearing.
