buddy of mine just bought a 2012 f-150 ecoboost with 16k miles. changed the oil today with Pennzoil Ultra 5W30 and a MC FL500S filter. Due to fuel dilution, i suggested he keep his ocis between 3.5-4k, is the Pennzoil Ultra good for the ecoboost or is there an oil that has a better resistance to fuel dilution and viscosity breakdown?

Your friend should get his oil changes at the Ford dealer for the life of the truck. And if the dealer doesn't use the right Ford spec'd oil, report him.

I wonder how long before someone recommends RT6 ...

In all honesty, if you're under wearranty, best to just use the MC Syn Blend 5w30 (it's a good oil!) and the MC filter (it's also good).

And make sure to carry a spare ignition coil in the tool box. Like a typical ford, they like to blow coils.

As the EcoBoost engine is also DI, a low-Noack oil like PU seems like a really good idea. Fuel dilution may or may not be a problem: if driving habits are such that the oil can warm up regularly it shouldn't be much of an issue.

If you want to get the best answer, try a 4k run followed by a used oil analysis that includes TBN.

Ford recommends Motorcraft 5w20 for this vehicle application. Can never go wrong with OEM.

This is a common misconception. While true of certain particular instances, most vehicles that suffer this malady due to tuning will have issues no matter how it is driven.

The Eboosters use tons of fuel as coolant, thus they are unlikely to ever avoid a bit of fuel dilution.

My mistake, missed the fine print on engine type.

MY2010 e'boost motors still spec 5W-20 (Flex and Taurus). All MY2011 and newer V6 e'boost motors spec 5w30, although they are identical to the 2010's for the Flex and Taurus. Go figure. Ford has not back-spec'd 5w30 for the MY2010 e'boost motors. I don't know what the I4 e'boost motors spec for viscosity.

That said, I run 2-1/2 qts XW-30 and 3 qts XW-20 every change in my 2010 e'boost Flex. Why? Because I can?
