ECCO shoes

Hello,

My trusty clarks that I wear to work nearly every day are getting a bit worn down... well more than a bit.

I found a pair of ECCO shoes that I really liked and that were quite comfortable, but in reality I know nothing of the brand, other than that they are about twice the price of the shoes that I normally buy.

Are ECCO shoes worth it? Are they good shoes? Rebuildable? Good quality?

Any insight would be most appreciated.

That's the brand that my son wears and he likes them. I've have only worn Birkenstock for the past 20 years.

Shoes and boots. I wear their loafers/slip-on's. The pair I'm wearing right now are 10 years old and on the original soul, but they are getting thin. I have a new pair in the closet when these wear out.

I had Ecco shoes that had natural rubber soles which chemically degraded, causing the rubber to stick to floors and chunk off. Eventually so little rubber was left that I had to throw them away. $200 shoes. What a rip-off.

Clarks are very good for the money and what I usually buy. I had Birkenstock boots which I really liked too but they costed more at about $200.

I've been very happy with my Johnston and Murphy shoes.

Mephisto shoes are extremely expensive and I suppose are ok to buy if you drive a Bentley or something like that.

I'm a big ECCO customer. The shoes are expensive but worth it. The shoes are very comfortable, durable, and well-made, with one exception. As JAG mentioned, the polyurethane soles disintegrate before the rest of the shoe.

But once the soles are shot, they can be resoled to better than new (not with polyurethane). I found a place (Cabot Resole) that can resole them via mail for $60. I had one pair of shoes done that way.

As far as the expense of the shoes, I now buy them off eBay. I've even bought used shoes that way. As long as you know what fits you for a certain model, you can realize some tremendous savings.

There are several items I wouldn't buy used: underwear, hats and helmets, shoes, gloves, and leather jackets. The risk of funk is just too great.

I've never considered ECCO shoes as they don't make shoes with leather soles. I can't see myself wearing dress shoes with rubber soles.

Yeah, I find that bizarre, too. Not only smells but think of all the fungi or bacteria you can get.

Agreed, but I dont consider the ECCO shoes, at least the ones Im looking at, to be dress shoes. They are effectively office shoes, for wear with khakis, shirt, maybe tie and blue blazer. For dress, i.e. suit and tie, I have a different set.

I love leather soled shoes, but for daily use, walking a lot, rain, etc., a ruber sole is in some ways superior.

I got expensive ($320) work boots with cork/neoprene soles. Oh boy, do I start skating on wet surfaces.

I have worn Clark's since the 70's they are very comfortable, the old British made models would last Decades!
For the last year I've worn Dansko clogs, they look a little Funky, but man, I could wear these All day! I like the idea I can slip them on and off.
I have a wide foot with a high instep, shoes can be a problem!

I bought a pair of ECCO sandals at a place called Last Chance here in the Phoenix area...sells seconds and used items. I found these sandals (BARELY used) for $30...usually ~$120. One of the best footwear buys I've ever done.
I even had to run in them as I didn't know I'd have to during a heart checkup. Felt as good as running shoes.
I bought a second pair off of EBay and they didn't feel as good...wonder if they're fakes? I can wear the newer ones, then put on the old ones and can feel the difference.
Still, good shoes overall.

I've found that most moderately priced leather shoes made by reputable manufacturers will last indefinitely if taken care of correctly. Meaning that you apply some mink oil type stuff once in awhile, and don't beat em too hard.

Then again, I don't have too much experience, since I've only really had two pairs of everyday leather shoes. (I'm 27, started wearing real shoes at age 19, tennis shoes before that) I bought a pair of Doc Marten low top lace up shoes that I wore everyday for 5 years and still have. Now I have a pair of slip on Clark's that I've been wearing everyday for the last 2 years. Both look new, other than the sole. Eventually I just get sick of em and get a new pair. Both great shoes.

BTW, I recommend checking out Red Wing as well. The boots are amazing (I wear em 10 hrs a day, everyday at work) but they also recently came out with some pretty decent looking casual/formal low top shoes. Made in USA, of course. Expensive, but Red Wings have never let me down.

That happened to an old pair (maybe about 10 years old?) of Eccos I had paid almost $100 for. So I mentioned it to the guy in an Ecco shop, and he said they had problems with this in the past and gave me a prepaid envelope to send them back. Got a new pair of my choice from Ecco under warranty! And I just got a nice new pair of Ecco 'dress' shoes for xmas. Love them! (And they're NOT Made in China!)

We just discovered my Ecco shoes were leaving terrible scuff marks on the floors. My shoes are now banned at work.

We just discovered my Ecco shoes were leaving terrible scuff marks on the floors. My shoes are now banned at work.


If you'd also worn rustling pants you might have even gotten fired.
