Hi Bitoggers.
how do you do it? and where?
this assumes no grocery store really near by and no cooler in the trunk...

thanks and happy motoring

P.S. this is not about using gluten-free as a diet, so please spare me the "fad" comments...

I choose things that dont' have bread or other processed grains.
(Chips are ok too, esp if they are bean chips. Beanitos are amazing!). Aside from that I eat larger meals at reputable restaurants (no fast food).

Oh and the GF usually packs a decent cooler with fresh veggies and oodles of H2o

So are you only eating at restaurants? If so I think you can order rice or potatoes instead of bread. Salads work too. At McDonalds, you can get a meal sized salad.

Fruit and veggies for me, and potato chips... I have become an apple connoisseur.
Also I try to leave almonds hidden somewhere out of mind for an emergency.
I suppose those rice cake things would last for years in a car too but I don't eat them.
For eating out, I often order steak now, it usually only costs a couple bucks more than the plate of bad reheated pasta and sauce.

Carry lots of food, but eating out Cracker Barrel, Fuddrucker's, salads with chicken (many dressings have gluten so I use just oil and vinegar). Qdoba and Cipotle work well too, but have to ask about preparation. Most fast food is out, but fries and potato products in general work in a pinch.

Are you gluten free people doing it because you are allergic and your digestive system can not handle gluten, or for some other reason?

Burgers without the bun.
Chicken without the bun.
Make it patently clear to the server that they will poison you if they don't take care of your requests.

Yes, SeaJay, my father in law died of small intestine cancer due to this issue. My wife has drastic problems if any gluten is ingested. Some may be of the fad following but many people have serious, real issues. No malice intended here, just reporting the facts.

disclaimer: i did not start this thread to be a troll. it is not about a diet fad.(which is why i actually thank the GF diet fad consumers: they made it more/largely available for us, the really needing ones)

i have celiac-disease in the family. it is the higher form of an allergy to gluten(an allergy sometimes you can grow out of it..... this one is genetic and for all your life)
i started the thread because sometime on the road not all products have a list of ingredients on the packing or not as "clean" (fries in the same oil as the breaded chicken....)

I have an allergy to wheat/gluten, and I feel much better when I avoid it.

Bring little bags of fruit, veggies, seeds, and nuts whenever you travel. At least that way you know you get some good food in you whether you stop or not. And those items are a great start to a good meal. And it quenches the urge to stop for fast food as you get hungry. Even without a cooler I used to bring a lunch with me in the car. A piece of chicken will hold out just fine for 4-6 hours.

Unfortunately, I think the fad dieters are ruining it for you now.

Same here, I get horrible stomach pain/cramping when I eat gluten and dairy. Started out of the blue in my early 30's. I also had joint pain that went away after going gluten free. Crazy what it can do to your body of it doesn't like it!

When I hit the road and have to eat out, I usually order steak, chicken or fish along with a potato and veggie as long as I can verify the potato has no bread coating.

I also bring lots of snacks just in case I get stuck in a spot with nothing but fast food.

Also, Walmart, Target etc are everywhere. You can always get gluten free stuff there.

this one is for the one off when the cooler's contents had been sitting trough to much of a heat to make healthy sense especially with small kids (think driving florida and georgia (hehe ATL traffic) in heat, then stopping in TN to eat)
i always pack extra healthy things (fruits, veggies, nuts mix) but sometimes you run out of them (drive il to fl, trip to disney, couple trips to beach, drive fl to il... you get my point)

You can get coolers that plug into an accessory outlet in the car now. Makes traveling with perishables much nicer. I guess you can't use them while the car is parked at a theme park but on the road it works great.

The key is to really look your server in the face and make them understand the major issue. And try to avoid chains that don't give a bleep about you.

SeaJay, just a small sample: i cannot give my kids most of the commercial yogurt with fruits... the fruit "smack"/jam may contain thickeners which may actually contain gluten even when advertised as gluten-free

about your dairy problem, it may not be lactose-intolerance: after we found out about my kids gluten problem, still had the reactions.... we have been able to trace it back to some fat free sour cream and some on-an-off regular sour cream from the same firm/company. i blame it on consistency between batches or some sort of thickeners...
