Cheaper and low tech? The fault line above South America has been rather active lately. I can't understand why they build non earthquake proof concrete buildings there. Right on the fault line.
I was in Turkey in the summer of 2000 when an earthquake hit. If the building codes were properly written and enforced, the damage and loss of life would have been much less. Instead, property owners were adding 3 additional floors onto 4 story buildings with no reinforcement of the foundation or lower floors. Concrete standards, which were generally inferior to US building standards, were cheated on. Often, you could rub concrete with a stick and sand would come off.We are always along for the ride. Concrete is a wonderful building material, impressive compression strength. But near zero tolerance for quakes.
Steel on the other hand is a better choice for areas that shake.
When we flew earthquake relief flights to Haiti, it was obvious the concrete buildings failed, the steel hangar type buildings did not.
Concrete can be built to handle earthquakes. They make concrete bridges that easily handle dynamic loads well.We are always along for the ride. Some space-weather sites have attempted to correlate various solar events with earthquakes. Whether there is actual correlation is still debated. There is enough correlation between major sunspots activity slamming the earth's atmosphere and earthquakes. The theory is that gigantic shifts of the density of the entire atmosphere is sufficient enough to produce both changers of atmospheric force acting on each square inch below those areas and actual change in the gravitational attraction of the atmosphere with respect to the Earth because of the vast change of density of that atmosphere.
Something that an individual cannot perceive as being there still have significant forces.
One of the youtube channels that monitors the sun's activity actually goes as far as to predict earthquakes , when there are major sunspots heading towards earth. And he has been a lot more accurate than people would suspect such a type of observation to predict.
