Early trans fluid change

06 Scion xB. 4500 miles. My youngest has ground the gears a few times going into 3rd(letting clutch out too soon). I thought I'd change the transmission fluid just in case there is metal floating around in there. Manual calls for 75W-90. But also says GL-4 or GL-5 may be used. Which should I go with? Thanks.

Help him out and spend the money for synth. It's the only thing to quiet some gear boxes. I don't know how they complicated modern gear boxes. How did I ever shift with 90 weight hypoid in every manual that I owed for so many years without grinding every time

Stick with a high-quality synthetic GL-5, Chromium.

You may want to stay away from the GL5 in the Scion, as it is, after all, a Toyota. You should look at the Redline MT90, Amsoil MTG, Motul, or Speciality Formulations. I had issues with the Amsoil Severe Gear (75W-90 GL5) in my 6 speed Toyota transmission. I tried the Amsoil MTG next but now am switching again, to the Redline MT90.

BTW, you are actually grinding the syncros (dog teeth), not the actual gears.

Which ever you choose to use, get your youngest to help change it. Let me drain it and pump new fluid in it and pay for it all. Make sure he gets really dirty, might change his gear changing attitude.

Filter out the used oil for metal particulates, and charge him $10,000 a pound for it.

leave it and run it.. save your $ and time and teach whoever to drive it properly. when its time then drain and fill with oe or replace with a mtl lube not a everything rated gear lube from az. i like the spec formulations products and find them to work well in my toys. the redline is also popular among some of the toy guys. you dont have chunks or teeth floating around and if you did you'd be at the dealer allready.
