My father just bought a 2010 BMW 535xi. 20,000 miles on it. Anything we should know in particular about this model? I'm somewhat familiar with the engine family and BMW's in general but not with 5-series at all.

I know this is the N54 engine with flaky fuel pumps, but not much else.

There was a recall (service campaign) for the high pressure fuel pump. Any BMW service dept should be able to tell if the recall was done (if not, they can take care of it at no charge), and if there are any other outstanding service campaigns/safety recalls. Just give them the last 7 digits of the VIN. They should also be able to tell you service/ warranty claim history of the car if it was done at a BMW dealer.

Other than the hpfp, no problems with the N54 that I know of. Some owners report having to replace turbos and/or fuel injectors at 75k+ mi.
 
I don't think the fuel pump has been replaced yet as it did not show up on the service records. I know my cousin went through 2 or 3 in the time he owned his first 135i, they seemed to go like clockwork.
 
It is a great car! It just needs periodic replenishment of HPFP. They are cheap too, only thousand dollars a pop or less!







All kidding aside, get that service recall done on the HPFP and hopefully the latest generation of HPFP should last for a while. The cooling system will need work by 80K miles but that is common on most BMWs.
 
As far as I can tell, if the fuel pump has not failed "yet", they do some kind of software update. I'm not sure any of that fixes the problem since I haven't heard of the problem being fixed at all, but my understanding from before is that the pump has a 10 yr/120k mile warranty on it.

Cooling system is no big deal, have experience with plenty of BMW's. Some of that is due to neglect which won't be an issue, some from the chintzy plastic stuff.
 
When I was looking at a CPO 535ix, it was already on its 3rd HPFP and was still under 30K miles. Even with the 10/120 warranty, I lacked the courage to pull the trigger.

1st one at 4K (car came on the tow hook) and the second one at 16K. I think the second one was the official recall and the first one was warrantied repair.

But what a fun car to drive! After driving 535x, I understood why people want to buy a BMW.
 
He took delivery today. I had a chance to drive it for a while. Seems like a nice car. Not my taste personally but very nice otherwise.
 
Steering wheel feel is numb. I don't like the throttle tip-in (and it's the same on the E90's I've driven). Brakes lack a progressiveness (though pedal is nice and firm) that I like. Transmission shift quality, especially 1-2 is sometimes strange (something I've noticed on most other auto BMW's I've driven).

It's a nice driving car, I don't want to make it sound bad.

It's also less peppy than I was expecting. My cousins 135i doesn't feel far off my GTO - this 535 is a lot more elastic feeling in its power delivery.

I'm painfully uninformed on this - I really don't know. If it's electric, I'd say it's decent compared to reviews I have read about electric power steering on other cars. If it's hydraulic, it's terrible. Of course, it's better than the E90 I drive regularly that feels more like the steering shaft travels through some partially cured epoxy or cement.

I do have to keep in mind that the target buyer of a 5-series is older and maybe doesn't care about steering feel as much, especially on an AWD model. There are certainly worse cars out there - but the ones that come to mind aren't marketed as a sports sedan.
 
Good point. This car only has 21k miles on it and has already had the oil changed twice. But looking into the fill caps on some of the cars I saw would make the BITOG'ers on here throw up.
 
Sounds like you got a good one. I know a lot of people who lease like that and simply ignore the maintenance minder. My attorney traded in his 2010 E350 last week and in the mid 30k range it still has the factory fill or whats left of it.

If I was buying a late model used car, even a CPO one if it had over 10k on it I wouldn't buy it without service records of some oil changes.

You mean to tell me engine oil is not a lifetime fluid on a luxury vehicle???
