E-Core Filters, Briefing Please?

Would someone be so kind as to bring a FNG up to speed on the e-core filter. I gather it's sold by Wal-Mart under the ST brand, but what's so special about it? How can I tell if it's the "e-core?" It sounds like this filter is good "bang for buck," which is my prime search criteria. Many thanks.

Too much debate to get up to speed that easily. There are 5 topics with e-core in them on the first page alone.
