I was wondering how drywallers finish a ceiling with a texture. I'm not doing plaster, just jt. compound. My ceilings upstairs have tiny little dimples in them, almost like tiny pebbles spaced out, not popcorn. Any idea how they did that?

Another that I wouldn't mind doing is just kind of a brushed messy look. I did one years ago on a bath ceiling and I just kind of trowelled around trying to mimic a look in other rooms. I wondered if they used a specific tool. Wondering how to do it right I guess as opposed to just winging it.

Reason why, I am putting in a fan, vented out through attic roof. Ceiling is bit beat up, few small spider crack from condensation from kids shower.

Can you post a picture? It could be as simple as adding a tiny amount of popcorn or heavy sand to the paint and rolling it on. There are a lot of different textures and a lot of different ways of applying them. A picture might be helpful.

Might be able to get a picture tonight. Might be right on the paint. I bet that is what they did.

If it is sprayed on they can use a finer mist called orange peel to a heavier "knockdown" finish where they spray the ceiling wait a at then "knock down" the splatter with a trowel.

Most finishes these days are simply blading on the compound either in an elaborate pattern..or not leaving a raised pattern look to it. Some put sand in the compound to give a different look.

It could be blown onto wet paint, not the best way but I've seen it done that way. As I mentioned a small amount of the texture material can be added to the paint and brush or rolled on. Hard to say w/o seeing it. If you can't get a picture get a small piece of sheetrock and play around with it. In my area they do very little texture painting unless they're trying to hide something. LOL

A while back my GF's son was helping me install some ceiling fans and stepped through her textured ceiling....it was finished in a sort of random "starburst" pattern (for lack of a better description)....she looked on-line and found a drywall brush head with what looked like a close match to her pattern and after applying (simply "loaded" the brush head with drywall compound and vertically stamped the pattern in), it was difficult to see where the repair was. IIRC, the brush head was around $15 and she still has it.....somewhere.

Yeah here too (practically the same area). It was funny when going out west that most of the homes Ive been in have what looks to me like a sloppy thin topcoat... Depending upon the style of the home, it works...

Mix compound mud with white ceiling paint to a heavy paint texture. Roll onto ceiling drywall with a heavy roller and hit with a stipple brush for the star-burst pattern. Then knock down the burst with a 24" flat blade. My best advice: Do the whole room ceiling and have a guy who does it every day do it. be sure to cover EVERYTHING with plastic that you intend to discard.

Here are a couple pics. Best I could. Again, looks like sand almost.

I just put in the recessed light. I use Plaster around and sanded.
