I'm going to be driving Cross Country to see family this summer. With my stratus, it will be a little more then flying, but I want to see the country too...

So lets say in a month, because each way is 5500km, minimum 11,000km will be put on my car in 4 weeks.

I've only began running synthetic on my Current OCI with Pennzoil Platinum. This OCI is also going to be the longest extended drain (i'm probably going to go 5-6K on this, because this is the first synthetic OCI in my car that i know of, which with my driving habits should take me close to before I go).

After doing my valve seals, the car is consuming no oil. I slightly overfilled it 3K ago and its still slightly overfilled on the dipstick. A'OK there.

If I get AMSOIL SSO 0w30 with an EaO oil filter, this is pretty much the amount of easy highway driving that AMSOIL should says is great for their thextended drains? I just don't want to have to change the oil and filter twice within a month, so I think SSO would be perfect for this job. It would also be the first time on SSO, so to stabilize the chemistry, I don't want to run it too long.

So with 11,000KM on SSO within 4 weeks (changed the week before I go), how much longer with the SSO should I be able to go after?

since it's all highway miles it shouldn't be hard on your oil at all. i'd say it should be able to go at least double that amount

Another vote for PP, just because it's what you've been using.

Amsoil SSO might be a better long-drain oil, but you don't want to switch oils just for one road trip unless you're going to stick with that oil afterward. Every time you switch, there's a period of time when you might not get peak protection because the new oil is cleaning up the films left by the previous oil and laying down its own. Since 11,000 km should be just fine for PP, you're probably better off not rocking the boat.

since you have platinum now I would stick with it and change before the trip, different oil brand right before would concern me because sometimes a car just dosn't do well with certain oils and you dont want to find that out half way through the trip, wave as you pass Michigan

Use the SSO with confidence.

People will try to save you a few dollars, but really over 10K you should use an oil designed for long drains. It's interesting on BITOG - people almost feel they have a duty to talk posters into a lower price oil. While I think PP MAY make it without any highway burn off, and probably would have an OK TBN with some top off - you are better off using a 15-20-25K+ oil.

You could finish off the summer with the SSO.

+1 PP is working well for you, I'd stick with it. Highway runs like the trip you're planning are the easiest on the oil, and the best for the car. Have a safe trip and enjoy!

Whatever oil you choose bring some extra for top off. PP should do that interval just fine with all highway miles. Be sure to change your air filter if it hasn't been changed in a while. If you choose sso you could probably run it longer after the trip. How much longer would depend on a UOA. There's no concrete answer to that question.

:headslap:  You is right. Too early in the AM. I absolutely read the KM's as miles. Wow!

Your engine will spend 99% of its driving in 2000-3000RPM I assume with jut a few warm up cycles so your oil will likely be like new when you take it out...

Try to use some fuel injector cleaner while you are at it... such long trip can really help clean things up..

+1

Highway driving in the summer across Canada and back is probably one of the best conditions for the oil. You could run a good cleaning dino (PYB, MC5K, Hav DS, VWB) on the ride out there and change it for the ride back if you want to do a good cleaning; I wouldn't use a cleaning additive like MMO, ARX, or Rislone - just the PCMO straight (neat).

I regularly do 7-8k mile OCI's of mostly city driving with conventional, and you're worried about doing 7k, all highway, on a synthetic?

Get real, man!

It sounds like a good time, at least with an ipod and a beaded seat cushion.

+1 in 2001 I drove my old 81 Omega from Vancouver to Toronto after a fresh oil in B.C. It looked like new when I got home even in that old beast.
Schedule yourself some extra time and stop and see a few things while your out there too, you never know when you'll be out that way again.
I might recommend the route along lake superior as well, its more interesting than the northern route through Hearst although I've never gone through that northern part of Quebec. Lots of boreal forest!

I'm going to be doing close to 6,500 miles in 2 weeks this summer and all I'll do is change the oil before I go.

I'm hoping that gas is not over $3 a gallon this summer. (I know... I'm a dreamer)

I wish I could take more time off but they only allow us 2 weeks off at once no matter how much time you have avail...

To the OP, be safe and have a good time.

Agreed, I think we should establish a rule that all posts be in miles as the majortiy of members here still think in miles.

Kinda like English being the standard language of avaition...
