Today I took advantage of the AA oil promotion involving one jug of QSUD and a Driveworks filter for $22. I have never used Driveworks but the construction appears to be stout and well made.

Who makes them?
Acceptable for short, sub 5k oci?

You couldnt upgrade to a better filter? Im sure it will be fine but Id go for a Fram orange can before that. If its for your Hyundai id stay OEM.

Nonsense. For an under 5K OCI it'll be fine.

Last I recall they were made for Purolater specs by an outside party.

Ive used them for a while on my outback. Should I be worried. I switched to those because of the bad things Ive heard about fram and even puralator lately. Does anyone make a good inexpensive filter anymore?

I have not used a Driveworks filter yet but I'm starting to think that you might be right and no one makes a quality low cost filter. It's starting to make extended drains more attractive. Buy the high end filter and premium oil and just run that combo twice is long to make up for the price difference. It seems to be better all around for me, my car and the environment too.

Agree. The white Purolator was $0.75 more, and was made in America, FYI.

Careful,
both the short Fram 3614
and longer 3600
both cross reference
to a Driveworks filter
the same size as the 3614...

They're a perfectly well made filter. If I had to be harsh, the ADBV should be silicone.

They're pleat spacing and tightness are better then Puro's of late, and they have a good heft and can thickness to them

Your opinion is pretty much invalid
......As a fact

Cut one apart when I worked there. The Puro L10241 AC PF53 equivalent. They are actually pretty well made. Nice pleat spacing coiled bypass spring etc. A crude center core and a cheap ADBV valve would be their only shortcoming. I woudn't be to worried about using one but I still wont when a US made filter is close in price.

I don't understand why they're offering a top-of-the-line synthetic oil with their bottom-of-the-line "value" filter? Seems like a mis-match to me......or is it that filters are not as important as we like to think they are?

Discuss.

I hear a china company owned by champ labs.

I could be wrong, but I think I read that some place

however I do know they are made in CHINA

Also there has been failures with them.

google it and see

It's been reported on here a few times that Fram is producing some of the Driveworks filters now, last I read about 8 models, all which would be marked Made in USA.

There was also mention that Fram is trying to get the rest of the models. AFAIK none of the models that are non-Fram produced have ever been confirmed to be build to meet the same spec as a Puro Classic. They look very similar to Puros but there has never been confirmed efficiency. The question of being a glorified rock catcher is out there.

That said, I ran a couple in the past, my biggest complaint was the ADBV. I'd personally like to spend the $3 to $5 for a P1 or FU on the right sale than run one again, but my car didn't explode.

If you want to chance it on your Hyundai, keep an ear out for any unusual engine noise at startup. See Hyundai's tech bulletin on aftermarket filters.

Not sure what that means, but other than using a modified version of the Puro numbering system, there been no authoritative information indicating any connection to Purolator. Afaik, to connection to Purolator at all.

Yes, considering the QSUD Syn would usable for an extended oci, it is a mismatch. But, it's about the bottom line and offering a synthetic oil change with a low teir filter, for a low price. But such practice is not limited to AAP, O'R has done similar but with an orange can and PP. So, rather than saying anything about filters, it's about offering the lowest price by using a throw in filter.

Back to the DW, there was a comment that Fram is making a few made in the US DW applications, but I've yet to see one either in person or on this board. Only seen the made in China DW.

I'd say the DW is ok for ~5k mi. oci.

I haven't seen them either (Fram made/Made in the USA DW) but personally I have not looked either and I have no insight into what models those 8 I mentioned are. What I've seen on BITOG is from one of Jay's (Motorking).

Edit - I just went back through a couple of PMs and it was 6 models not 8 - my mistake.

The FRAM EG filter is 95.7% efficient@20 microns and rated for 5k OCI's. The Tough Guard is 99% efficient@20 microns and rated for 10k OCI's, FRAM Ultra is 99%@20 microns and rated for 15K OCI's. As far as the end caps? There are now so many filter companies using our design now that the patent has expired you would think it would be a dead issue. Mann and Hummel are using it or just plain glue for end caps, Nissan uses it on OE filters, Toyota is just weaving the ends of the filter media together with no end cap at all. I could provide many more examples but really there is now point, the technology works and others using it is the proof.

Would be interesting to know which DW's were Fram filtration and whether or not they were orange can clones or ecores.

I'm aware of the origin of the comment regarding several DW filters not made in China. I just said hadn't seen them and thus I can't confirm, which was the point.

Perhaps next time I'm in AAP I'll take a closer look to see if I can find one.
