Drain it now, or later?

I have Motorcraft 5w30 syn blend in my 06 Ford Ranger 4.0. The oil has only about 2k miles on it, but it's been in there for 6 months. The truck has NOT been used for short trips. Whenever I used it, it was ran on the highway for a good 20-30 min. The rest of the time it sat in the driveway, which needless to say, was most of the time. I have a 5 qt jug of M1 0w-30 ready to go in, but I don't know if I should keep the Motorcraft in for a while longer.

go 4K miles, very similar conditions to my Explorer. I drive it a lot of HWY miles for a few days then it can sit for weeks. Never had a problem and you won't either, don't waste that MC oil thats in there.

I see no reason to change the oil yet with only 2K on it. Well unless you just want to change it a see how you like the 0W30 that is.

Well I am really anxious to try the 0w30. I really wanted to get it in there in time for the cold weather, but I'll only put maybe another 1k miles on it from now till mid-January. I guess it'll still be really cold and I can still see how it does. I thought a lot of people adhere to the every 6 months regardless of mileage with conventional, which is why I was asking. I guess I'll leave it alone for now.

exranger06,

I'm in the same situation with my Dodge Durango. I generally drive my truck only 3 times per week so on the Sundays I take my truck on the highway for a good spin to drive out any moisture from the oil. That way it circulates through out the entire engine and helps aginst sludge.

could probably leave it in but if you want to change it out for the winter i see no problem in draining it now and putting in the 0W30 for the entire winter

I'd leave it for 4-5k like the other said but it's your truck and your sleep you possibly may be missing out on, so make yourself happy and change if desired.

The oil is still good. I agree with the 5k interval or 1 year. HOWEVER - if you can drain it now while the weather is good and run that Mobil 1 thru winter you'll be happy not to have to change the oil on a cold winter day.

I'd hate to waste the perfectly good oil. I'm gonna leave it in till at least 3k, which should hopefully be before January. I'm trying to use the truck more often so I can rack up those miles faster (without needlessly driving around). I'll probably use the 0w-30 year round if I like it, so I suppose there's always next year.
