Saying goodbye to the U.S. economy, one earth-day at a time...

We have to conserve and explore other technology at the same time. It's not all bad news. Job growth can result from this green movement.

What types of increases are possible by lower vehicle weight using carbon fiber or lighter materials? Take the Honda Accord Coupe for example. If they were able to make it 300-400 lbs lighter, I'm curious as to what the fuel efficiency would be?

Its going to happen whether it required by law or not. The price of fuel is going to dictate it. And I say, its about time.

Don't worry, people like me will continue to drive 8mpg leaded race gas burning cars on the street to balance things out.

People refuse to conserve, so the Government has to get involved to make the public conserve by requiring higher fuel efficiency in trucks/suvs. what's wrong with that?

No, no. Just kidding. (I think). According to the Detroit News, "The U.S. Transportation Department today will propose a sweeping increase in fuel economy standards, requiring passenger cars to average 35.7 miles per gallon and light trucks 28.6 mpg by 2015

The biggest excuse around here for buying something big is that everyone else is driving something big so one needs to either see over them or win in a crash.

Making the average car smaller will move that average in a healthy direction.

And if people think the new vehicles are underpowered junk, they'll suddenly take a keen interest in actually maintaining the one they've got. Not crushing one car and forming another has eco benefits too.

I'd venture to guess it might improve the fuel economy by about 1MPG city, with a lesser improvement for highway.

There was a DOS program called, I believe, CarTest which ran calculations based on vehicle weight, engine size, frontal area, etc. to both come up with the expected 0-60 and 1/4 mile times as well as estimated fuel economy. It was very accurate. You might try finding it to play with it to see what it would take to make a 150MPG vehicle.

That is a great socialist statement
What about you driving what you want and others doing the same

not if it takes money out of my wallet. Everyone else can buy lavish homes, foreclose, and have credit card debt coming out of their eyeballs for all I care. It doesn't affect me. Gas prices gets me in the arse no matter what I do.

Usually? You meant to say "ALWAYS"

Even I make mistakes. WE as a nation are in bad shape due to the politicians that have been reelected .

I actually agree.

I guess it is easier to blame others than it is to live with the decisions we have made for ourselves.

Well, then ..start making choices that enhance the conditions of the entire society and the government will go into atrophy. Now if you continue to act as a self centered and self interest motivated type, and decide to heck with the society ..then many are eventually going to say "ouch!".

So, add value to the society in everything you do ..and make America great! Now I know you've spent your entire life attempting to show just what's possible in personal achievement ..living by example ..but the promotional campaign is running out of funding.

ASK NOT!!
