Me too. None of my cars has those stupid devices, nothing but trouble.
 
Sorry to hear of your troubles, but I've never had a TPMS issue in 47k miles, nor have any of the cars that I service. The only people who seem to have constant issues are those with nails in their tires and/or do not check their tire pressure when it is cold.

It seemed like yours was just a one-off case.

Thanks Critic. Yes, this would be the first actual hardware issue I've ever had with a TPMS system. The van is a 2008 w/ ~56K miles on it. The light has been on at least since the low 40K mile range.

It looks like you can mail-order aftermarket TPMS sensors for this application for ~$50, but you have to contend with getting them "programmed". It seems like each sensor manufacturer requires different programming hardware, which is ridiculous.

I had TPMS on my 2008 Santa Fe as well. I only owned it 'till the high 60K mile range, but never had a TPMS issue. That system had a little diagram of the vehicle on the dash and would light up which tire was low on air.

I would pay a bit extra to NOT have this system.

For the tires-TPMS sensors currently on the car, the Quickset connector will recognize them and you can store it in reverse on to the software.

I had an experience at the Honda dealer to rotate these four winter tires on to the CR-V and plug into to the OBD II for sensor recognition for $90.00 with a smug remark that in the Spring it would be another $90 to rotate back. The comment was like he had me by the gonads.

Well... For $150 and 30 minutes of my time, I do it myself as I freely ...swing...


Tell us more about this! What else can it do? Is it standalone unit or needs a laptop?
 
As requested, the following:

The box of the TPM Quickset says to visit www.tpms-tools dot com or email tpms at atequsa dot com for further information. The instructions in the box and the graphic instructions printed on the box were sufficient for me.

This is a pc based interface where you can save the summer and winter sensor IDs on the software. All you do is upload the specific ID info into the car's ECU to install or reset with the supplied connector. The connector is detached from the pc after you feed the specific info to it. So it is a small device taken by the installer to the car.

I had read prior of Tirerack selling them but am guessing they had too many returns and no longer sells them. I purchased mine from an online vendor. If you can use an OBD II scanner and reset the check engine light after retrieving trouble codes, you can do this.

At $90 to install my four wheels and reset at the Honda dealer times twice a year ($180) , this purchase ($150) is worth it for me. Pays for itself after one year. And I do not need to make an appointment nor put up with the upselling. The other part of this is having a full changeover of winter wheels with TPMS which can be a significant purchase.

This is a specific TPMS tool and just updates the car's ECU of TPMS IDs.

I do understand some folks do not have the time and/or patience for vehicle maintenance. For this vehicle, I have installed a Fumato valve for easier oil changes, changed out differential fluids, transmission ZW-1 fluid and installed the Honda fog lights courtesy of YouTube and the paper instructions.

For me it's not the time or patience, it's the expense. I wouldn't think too many people who have a set of winter tires mounted on their own wheels, actually have them fully setup with TMPS.

If I were to do this for my 2008 Odyssey, the least expensive mail-order aftermarket TPMS sensors are $50-60/ea, then you need a means to get them programmed so the van will recognize them.

Then the water is further muddied by the fact not all TPMS programmers will work with all sensors and vehicle combos.

Case in point is the Alligator brand TPMS sensors I tried on my van. Even the shop that sold them to me couldn't get them to work with my van.
