I emailed ExxonMobil in regards to possible Group III basestock in their product. I asked for a straight answer, but I feel this is anything but straight. I also included the now popular quote from their website "...Mobil 1 with SuperSyn uses high-performance fluids, including polyalphaolefins (PAOs)"

Thank you for your inquiry,

The information regarding Mobil1 motor oil formulation as it is
available to the public is what you have stated below in your e-mail.
Mobil1 motor oils are very unique in nature, especially the synthetic
basestocks utilized to gain added performaance and protection over the
competition, we are just not willing to give this secret out. The
bottom
line, no motor oil on the market can out perform Mobil1 in the real
world in actual engines.

Mobil hopes you continue to view Mobil products with trust and
confidence.

Would you give out proprietary information that gives you the edge? It would be like shooting yourself in the foot eh?

They won't ever tell you. That's my guess.

Just because we'd like a straight answer doesn't mean the company is obligated to give us one. If there is some info they're not willing to give out, they will always excuse themselves saying that it's a company secret. To certain extent, they're right.

Oh yeah, and...

for sure.

I realize they arent obligated to give me an answer. It's just a shame they aren't open and honest about the product. I suppose if they said it had some group III there would be many angered people and many advertising campaigns by Amsoil and the like against Mobil 1.

Big freakkin deak Z_ombie!

The rumour is already out and there's nuttin you can do about it.

Just face the music and move on (to seek some better synthetics)

my 2c's worth. No need to beat that dead horse.

So pretty much their response was,

"Our oil IS the best over all others....we can't tell you why exactly...but trust us it IS!"

I think I will keep my close out purchased Castrol StartUp.

Not tryin to hold on to false hopes, I just posted their response for everyone to view. I realize rumors are flying and dead horses lay scattered all over the forum. I just had to post that email, the response was too good to not post.

LOL!!!! That's exactly what every one of their responses so far has meant...

At least my new best friend Mr. Platinum is honest with me...

Yeah, Zombie, where were you a couple of months ago when we ALL wrote them?

We all got the same response. When *I* got that response, I quit buying their thin, bottom-tier water-laden, ethanol-overly diluted gas, too. That's probably $150.00 or so per month. I bet M1 is secretly GroupII. If they'll lie, worm, and weasel over GroupIII, well, really, how big a step is it to the next level?

Gotta hit em where it HURTS!

It's too bad XOM just doesn't come out and say "yeah we now use some Group III in the mix..."etc. Due to their position on what is synthetic, I believe they can't do that bc they will look like fools. If the performance is still there, which I don't think it is, I wouldn't care either way. I should really test M1 vs the Amsoil in my car now to see how it holds up. Hopefully I will test both.

I was not yet a BITOG member or 'Junkie'. Now I am contemplating GC or Amsoil.

For what application?

1980 280zx, 246,000 miles, runs great, doesnt leak a drop or burn any oil. Calls for a thicker oil, but I'm willing to give 0w30 a try since its on the thick end of the spectrum for a 30 weight. Amsoil represents an honest company to me, so I'm also intrested in their products, although abit pricey.

You did not ask the right question.

Mobil has made a statement in the past.

"Mobil 1 Basestock is all Group IV or higher".

The correct question is, "Has this statement been withdrawn ?".
