"Don't know what oil to go with.. HELP!"

I've been trying to figure that out too.

Beginning to think weak oils are the ones in the Used Oil Analysis forum that finish with low TBN #. That would reflect an oil did not start with state of the art additive package, which forms better anti-wear film.

Blenders that make additive packages for passenger car motor oil have discovered how to make oil perform better than ever. Now regular oil lasts longer than 5000 miles.

In the used oil analysis forum, I just looked at 5000 - 6000 mile reports and for conventional oil Pennzoil and Castrol looked good. For synthetic oil Valvoline did not look so good.

All I can say is if I were doing an oc in my car tomorrow I would get Pennzoil Platinium because it's cheap, M1 because it finishes with a high tbn #, or Castrol GTX.

So are you more confused than when you started? LOL

I'm a newb too around here and the more I read the more confused I become.

But I think I'm getting some what of a handle on what I want to use. I'm jumping on the Pennzoil bandwagon for the most part mainly because it apparently is an excellent oil AND oddly one of the cheapest (Penn. high milage, 5 qt jug for $12.50 at WM). I know it's not THE best for everyone and not the best overall. But I have come to the conclusion that there are LOT of good oils out there and you can almost do a coin flip between them and do good, such as Pennzoil, Valvoline and Mobile, Motorcraft (if you're looking at Synthetic, even if not, the price is as low as a lot of conventional oils) and more. I was surprised to learn that Rotella was a great choice for some applications in cars (always thought it was a heavy machine oil).

Also learned that surprisingly Supertech oil filters from Walmart are a decent filter if you're looking budget AND a good filter. WM also has good prices on AC/Delco filters which of course would be the factory filter on your car. Then as mentioned you have what many consider the top of the line... Wix. The general consensus is stay away from Fram and almost anything else is going to be pretty good depending on long you want to run the oil.

So you see, everyone has their own favorite combination, but fortunately there are lot of good oils and good filters that almost any combination will work. I plan on doing frequent oil changes so Pennzoil and a Supertech or AC/Delco filter is a good price vs performance option that I'm going with.

Also, would like to know more how you found out Lucas was garbage? I doubt you came to that determination on your own, you must have just read it was garbage and just believed it. I know that's another debate in itself, but I would believe the thousands or more people that have actually used it and give positive testimonials instead of the thousands who have NOT used it but bad-mouth it. Not everyone is going to benefit from it, but I haven't seen proof of a single case where it hurt the engine when used properly. It either helps or does nothing which doesn't make it garbage.

For the OP, If you woud like to use a synthetic think about Rotella 5w-40, Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40, Mobil 1 0w-40, or Castrol Syntec 0w-30.

rastoma... lol yes i am slightly more confused now than before. i as well would like to keep budget in mind as i do not want to spend a lot for an oil change. from everything i can gather.. i will use castrol gtx 5w30 in winter and 10w40 for hot summer months, with an a/c delco, wix, or purolator pure one filter.

for the lucas topic.. there was a video that someone tested it on here and it foamed up very badly. also someone did a used oil analysis with it and it had very bad top end wear for just 3000 miles of use.

actually i think i have narrowed down to keep using valvoline. but don't know if i should use maxlife or not. the only place it leaks ever so slightly is around the front seal under the timing cover, but i have never seen it leave a spot on the ground.

also i don't know what weight to use.. either 5w30, 10w30,or 10w40?

5w30 is a good choice in winter and 10W30 is a good choice in summer or year around too. I would stay away from a 10w40 conventional for that engine. A synthetic 5W40 would be OK though.

How about Mobil 1 15W50? As a member here once said,it`s more like a 10W50. I`ve used it all year round.
